Default Non-Sportbike Track Day

(I mentioned this last week in the "What did you do to your Cross Bike today?" thread, but I thought I'd start a new topic here, to keep any follow-up questions grouped together.)

In case anyone's interested, I participated in my first track day last week, a "Non-Sportbike Track Day," held by Tony's Track Days. You can read about that on their site, here:

Non Sportbike Track Days

The on-track pics became available over the weekend, and I just put up a sub-gallery using some of them. I have assorted additional info and comments along with the pics, here:

Non-Sportbike Track Day, Aug. 2015

If you're thinking about doing something like this -- you want to develop your cornering skills, and in general have a need for speed -- I can now whole-heartedly recommend it. Next year's schedule hasn't been finalized by those folks, but if they do this again I'm signing up for both days (and may ride my buddy's Burgman 650 for one of them).

Sounds like real fun. I would really love to put my Kingpin through the paces like that on a controlled course.,

Monster M.: this is not that different from what Streetmasters has been offering for a decade or so. See:

Streetmasters Motorcycle Training Workshops - The Precision Cornering Workshop

The trouble with that course, for me, is that it's on the West Coast. I had written to them a few times over the years, asking about the possibility of their holding something on the East Coast. Each time, they responded with words to the effect of "we'll think about it." But that's as far as it got.

So when I learned about these special days at Tony's Track Days, I jumped (but not soon enough, as I got locked out of the June one).

Cheers,

Bill P.

I believe Tony is the only one currently doing non-sportbike days on the east coast. I HIGHLY recommend the day and his organization. I've been riding with Tony for a couple years now and can't say enough about him personally, his staff, and the overall experience. The level of instruction is fantastic and everyone on the staff all the way up to Tony himself, and his wife, are extremely approachable and eager to help. For what it's worth, I am in no way associated with Tony's Track Days other than being a long standing and very satisfied customer.

yeah, thats a slight problem for me too.. but any time i head about a track day it was always for sportbikes.. someone told me they used to do some sort of rider training at watkins glen years and years ago, but i haven't ever heard of bikes being allowed at the glen..

already planning for next year to do one of these track days.... just gotta invest in some riding pants.

Another possibility is the Street Skills Riding Academy. See the info and watch the video at:

Street Skills Riding Academy | Street Skills on the Track

That track is in Harpersfield, NY, which I gather is much closer to you than Thompson, CT. The Street Skills on-track instruction seems less structured -- more flexible -- than the non-sportbike days offered by Tony's. I have no idea, in the real world, whether that's a good or a bad thing; probably really depends on both the particular instructor and particular student.

In any case, I have already exchanged emails with Jon DelVecchio, the head honcho at Street Skills, asking him to keep me in the loop when they schedule such days next year. So I might try a day there, too.

Cheers,

Bill P.
