You get that error when you are "downloading" a photo? Downloading is not unheard of but is a rare operation where you are attempting to copy a picture from the site to your own computer. There are other ways to do this including screenprints or using the "Snipping" tool if you don't need super high resolution.
Are you sure you didn't meant that you get this error when you are UPLOADING a photo from your computer to the site? If so, I wonder if the error is related to the file extension. The error would suggest that you are selecting an upload option for a .jpg/.jpeg file format but the file you are uploading is in a .gif file format. Is this the case? If so, change the format of the original file to a .jpg/.jpeg and try to upload it. There are a zillion ways to do this including Microsoft Paint. You can Google something like, "converting a .gif to .jpg" to learn how to do this.
