Default Race day

Maybe nice to post stuff about any (motor) race in any country that you think is interesting ....

MotoGP: Valentino Rossi: 20 years ago today... | MotoGP 0

MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi made his Grand Prix debut 20-years ago today, March 31st, in the 1996 Malaysian 125cc race at Shah Alam.

Here is a photo of the then 16-year-old at the event (copyright Gold and Goose).

The Italian finished the race in sixth place, 7.379s behind countryman Stefano Perugini, but went on to win in Brno later that year - the first of his 112 victories so far.

Rossi - now 37 and the oldest rider on the MotoGP grid - has won nine world championships, missing out at the final round in 2006 and 2015.

The Doctor will continue his quest for a tenth title during this weekend's event in Argentina.

I got to see the MotoGP races in Austin, Texas a month ago. Unfortunately, Rossi went down early in the race and was unable to finish . We were sitting at turn 1, where we could see all the action and most of the crashes. I have watched the races on TV before but this was my first time to see them live.

There's no way to describe the sound of these bikes. It has to be experiencedin person. These engines absolutely SCREAM! You better be wearing earplugs.

I've been to four MotoGP races now: one at Laguna Seca (flew from NY state to California, and rented a car); two at Indy (rode my Burgman 650 both times); and one in TX (first year it opened, rode my XCT there). A bucket-list item is to see a race at one of the tracks in Spain or Italy.

On the one hand, this is like pretty much any sport -- football, baseball, etc. -- where with close-ups, replays, slo-mo, and so forth, you get a better a view on TV, or with your MotoGP Internet subscription. OTOH, just like those sports, you really have to go to an event at least once to get a real feel for sounds, atmosphere, etc., of the real thing ... and it helps you understand what you're seeing when you see the events on television all the other times.

The noise is tremendous, as part of that experience. Hearing the quck-shifters as the bikes accelerate down the long straights particularly sticks in my mind: boom...boom...boom.

The Doctor at Indy and Laguna Seca, and a couple other Laguna Seca shots:

There is a cool video on the interwebs comparing an F1 car to a MotoGP bike racing each other on the same road track. I can't find it now but it was a race where the F1 car had to make four laps on a road course while the MotoGP bike only had to make three laps. The bike and car were had about the same top speed on a straightaway and the bike even had a faster initial start from the stop. However, the car completed four laps before the bike could complete three. The key difference was the cornering ability resulting from the huge aerodynamic downforce present in the F1 car. The car corners like it is on rails - often counterintuitively being able to corner tighter when it is going FASTER due to the increase in downforce. Not being at all knowledgeable about any form of racing and being a geeky engineer, I thought this was fascinating.

Back in the day we used to ride to Laguna Seca for the Super-bike races and camp in the middle of track (roll out the sleeping) keeping warm with a bottle of JD. While everyone was doing burnouts in the parking lot through the crowd. Get up in the morning make our way to the cork-screw stack out a spot, have a hot dog and beer for breakfast. The highlight of the couple days was watching Kenny Roberts, Fast Freddy Spencer and Eddie Lawson tear-up the track racing each other.
Thanks for the memory!!!
