Hi again all,
Well, after the rather long introduction over the past few days I want to share an idea with you all, and I would dearly love to hear your reaction, either publicly, by PM (or email: [email protected]
). I want to say from the outset that this idea has only developed in my mind in the last few days having seen all the camaraderie and fascinating stuff on here, and the warm welcome so many of you have given me, as well as the great advice over my wish to buy the High-Ball in Taipei. (I am still hoping we can agree a price!)
I have become completely fascinated by VICTORY, fired up initially by going to see that High-Ball in the one and only showroom here in Taiwan and the dealer's great attitude (Victory/Indian), then by the friendly welcome I received from you guys. I have been reading as much as I can about the brand and the more I become involved the more fascinated I have become.
So, the idea:
I am really fired up to write a book about VICTORY. It would be such a great story, conception to conclusion, Victory - The Complete Story. I am still in the very early stages of developing the idea but so far I am thinking of a book which would include not only the motorcycles themselves, cold and factual (although that must be in there and of course is essential), but also about VICTORY worldwide. I am envisaging stories and photographs of owners wherever they may be, road trips, experiences, some adventurous and some perhaps even humorous, and maybe even just some stories of every day usage - why ride a VICTORY, how and when you ride your bike, etc.
I envisage another chapter on marketing and advertising, again preferably with a worldwide flavour.
Ideally I would love to get a contact within Polaris. I have no intention to say anything negative about them, just to tell the story, and indeed in one section (maybe in the introductory chapter) I would praise the Indian brand - so Polaris should get something positive out of it. Of course I would have to cover the decision to pull the plug, but would do so factually and carefully. What I am trying to get is a suitable contact within Polaris.
I really wish we could hear from the designers and those within the Victory company. What was the original concept, how did it develop, was it led by a passion for motorcycles first and then moderated by financial considerations, or was it an economic decision to which the passion was then injected? Who came up with the name? Why? I have so many questions in my head I would love to ask!
I could go on - my mind is buzzing with ideas but for now let me leave it like this.
I was thinking of waiting before I shared this idea with you all, but one of the other members knows about this and suggested I shared it earlier, so here it is. There is NO DOUBT that this will only be possible with your help. I am not an expert by ANY means, but I am full of enthusiasm and if there is a feeling from you all that it is indeed worthwhile I will work doggedly to achieve something which is of interest.
I should maybe mention, to be completely open with you all, I am NOT a professional journalist and I am certainly not for a second expecting to get a dime from this. I am a retired British army officer. I have written numerous magazine articles over the years and have helped several friends with editing of their books. I am currently working on a couple of other completely unrelated books. So, I guess what I am saying is that I think I can write ok, I have lots of enthusiasm and energy and time, but I have no real knowledge of putting a book of this type together nor about copyright etc. I will learn, and I do have a couple of friends who have written professionally so am sure they will be able to offer me guidance.
Currently I am trawling EBAY for brochures, adverts and anything else to build up a body of research material beyond what I can readily find online. If anyone has any "stuff" do please let me know that too. And if anyone has a copy of the previous book, in any condition but at an affordable price, I would love to hear from you (maybe many of my questions would be answered in there).
So, that's very roughly the idea. What I really want to hear is whether the general feeling is a positive one. Is it a worthwhile project? If it goes ahead, would any of you be able to offer your stories and high-res photos?
I have set myself a date of roughly the middle of September to make the decision whether to proceed. By that time I hope I will have a decent idea whether there is sufficient interest- as I said, this would be OUR book - it would be completely impossible for me to do it without your support and encouragement. Also by then I should know if I can get interest from Polaris with access to press photos, and hopefully introductions to personalities within the company.
Do please let me know what you honestly think - worthwhile or not?
Regards from Taiwan,
Mark (aka Llama)
