According to John Bullough, Director of Transportation and Safety Lighting Programs at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, federal regulations stipulate high beams on cars cannot exceed a candlepower of 75,000 cadela. The limit for low-beams are 20,000 to 30,000 candela. Bullough says halogen, HID and LED lights all have similar power, but the bluish/whitish lights seems brighter to the human eye.
“Yellow light is a longer wavelength so it passed through the structure of the eye without much difficulty,” says Dr. Erik van Kuijik, Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Blue and white lights have a shorter wavelength, so that scatters more of the light.

“The light travels in many directions and it’s that scatter we perceive as glare,” Dr. van Kujik said.

The phenomenon becomes more pronounced when people hit their 40s and 50s, when the lenses in human eyes start to become more discolored.

Another reason headlights seem brighter is that more SUVs and truck are on the roads compared to twenty years ago, according to Russ Rader with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Those vehicles sit higher on the road

A lot are out of adjustment too...see it all the time.

Yea, these MFs our there wouldn't know a maladjusted headlight if it bit them in the ass. I be 20% of the crap on the road has at least one headlight point to the stars (exaggeration for effect). You know they're out when a stupid c-dan is lighting up the inside of your 4 wheel drive truck from two car-lengths back.

Amusing factoid about blue lights- They suck in rain as they reflect off the rain where "yellow" does not. After all the atmosphere is blue.....LMYR

The common rating for the color of the light produced by various lights is the Kelvin temperature. If you look on a lot of the lighting packaging these days, both household and vehicle, you will see a K or 'Temperature' rating number. General grouping puts most house lighting in the "Soft White" or approx. 2600 - 3500 K rating, "Bright White" (many halogen bulbs are in this area including the Sylvania "Silver Star" headlight bulbs) are in this group at approx. 3500 - 4100 K, "Daylight" or blue/white (found mostly in H.I.D. and LED) are the brightest looking the the eye and present items in the most "natural" light. Most operating room/surgical lights are in the 4,000 to 4,500 K area as it renders a truer color of organs and tissue.

Candle Power rating has more to do with the 'drive' or distance a light penetrates and can be seen. The Kelvin temperature does play in to this as the White/Blue spectrum tends to be more easily seen by the eye.

Adjusting the headlight aim on our Victory's is easy.

1. Position the bike straight on, 25' from a wall on level ground.
2. Sit on the bike and bring it upright, ensure a 'normal' load of gear, gas etc.
3. Turn on High beam headlight.
4. The top edge of the High beam should hit the wall 3" below where it is on the bike.
5. Adjust as necessary for Right/Left and Up/Down.

Sylvania Silverstar with there one year warranty sucks. I put them in my vision and its a bitch of a job on a vision. One year to the day one burned out and two days later the other one burned out> Lucy auto store gave me my money back.

Every time I bought a pair of those, I always get a check back in the mail, months later, for some class action law suit that gets settled, in the last 10 years I bet I have got back close to 100 bucks.

My truck had Piaa bulbs in it, had to adjust my lights when I did that. I almost never needed my high beams, those bulbs are awesome. But people would always flash me even after I had readjusted my lights to shine lower. Best thing was they had a wider beam to the sides and lit up the farm fields a ton better.

My 2018 CRV is great too, has the LED and its a white light without the blue tint to it.

When installing halogen, especially the high output ones like Silverstar, or HID bulbs it is important that you not touch the bulb with bare hands/fingertips. Doing so will leave contaminants on the bulb which will cause "hot spots" and the bulb to burn out prematurely.
