Default The $2.00 Circlip That Causes $1,000's To Repair

In the last two months I've seen another two Victory engines having to be replaced because of a pesky $2.00 circlip that let loose or broke. In both instances I know about (one I met the owner and one I read about online) the owners bought a new crate motor and also added a BB kit. That brings the total to $4,500? to $6500? to fix the damage brought about from a broken or loosened $2.00 circlip. Obviously the total bill will be dependent upon the cost to replace or repair the engine plus whatever level of performance is also added while the engine is out.

So, my questions:
1. Is a new crate motor also susceptible to that same $2.00 circlip letting loose?
2. What, if anything, can be done to avert the dreaded broken circlip?
3. Has Polaris already emptied their warehouse of new 106/6 crate motors? I highly suspect the answer to be yes and they have no intention of ever making more.

I'll admit this is an issue that worries me a bit. I'd love to add a BB kit to my CCT but I'm having a difficult time justifying spending any additional money for any further upgrades. Regular maintenance, yes of course, no problem. But wow, a $2.00 broken circlip repair can nearly cost half the bike's actual value. Especially troublesome without assurance the circlip issue has been corrected. Or if it even can be corrected. I'm not a sky is falling type at all. But I do rock the big CCT to the right now before leaving the garage just to ensure I don't hear anything out of place. And yes, it pains me to do so as I never gave a broken circlip a thought a couple of years ago.

Where is this circlip located? Is it the ring that's holding the end of the clutch basket that you are referring to?

In transmission, opposite side of clutch assembly.

That is a good question about the engines. I'm guessing the basic stripped down engine case won't be available because that isn't a part. The stuff that goes inside would be parts. Just my guess as I think they would try to get out of producing more complete engines even if they are still capable of doing so.

Bit concerned about this I wasn't aware of there being an issue with the transmission on these bikes.

You would be better off just buying a used bike with a 106 and swapping it out IMO. There is always a bunch of low mileage Vics for sale.

What is it that we are looking for? This does not sound good but from the sheer numbers of 106 engines it must be small? Not like the BMW shaft drive fiasco that seemed to happen to everyone the owned one. If was not if it would happen but rather when it would crap out and need a $3300 final drive rebuild. Why I sold my 05 K1200LT while still under warranty.

I think we need one of the Vic builders like Kevin or Lloyd to weigh in here... Just sayin.

I must be late to the party, first time hearing about a breaking circlip. So the part breaks without warning, and destroys your motor in the process, and the only way to tell is to rock your bike to the right before you start it and listen for a certain sound? WTF?
