I didnt like the 5 w 40 version. Very clunky when cold. Must shift down by the book.

I am on Spectro Gold now and have noticed the I can down shift ( anytime ) like a Harley now. Cold Shifts a quiet and shifting is really smooth all around except 1st to second is a little clunk sometimes but that's the nature of the beast. I cant complain.

I have used the Rotella T6 5w-40 for an oil change but then went back to Mobil 1 full synthetic. This oil change I used the Lucas 20w-50 and it seems to have clunky shifts like it did with the Rotella T6. Perhaps next go around i will source some of the 15w-40 T6

Preloading the shifter should eliminate those clunky shifts. I found T-6 way superior to Vic oil and that combined with preloading the shifter, gave me smooth and silent shifts.

Sunday afternoon I changed my oil and used Rotella T6 15W-40 ($20 a gallon at my local WalMart) with a new filter. In 65K miles, this is the first time I've used anything but Vic Oil. I rode about 40 miles on Monday evening. My CCT still goes THUNK into first, thunk into second and snick at all other times. Exactly like it has for 65K miles. I'm sure the Rotella T6 is great oil but it's not a game changer that I can see or hear yet.

All the best,

Mark

We will never get rid of the clunk into first gear on big V-twins, because the entire clutch assembly is spinning due to oil adhesion. But you can have quiet and smooth shifts if you will preload the shifter and dramatically minimize throttle movement between shifts.

Guys its NOT the oil or clutch plates. Its the shifter drum that is making the clunk. The shifter forks have to follow the groves and make the clunk when they hit bottom. HD and Vic's suck when it comes to this. All the jap bikes have a better design like there clutch pull is superior to Vic's and HD's.
The photo I add here will show you what a drum looks like

I agree and that is for sure the big source. Its funny that I always wanted one of those Smooth $200 Baker drums for my Buell but as it aged and is working on 50k miles the trans shifts very smooth now. Maybe soon it will grenade! Mobil 1 20-50 vtwin.
