Default Saddle Sore 1000 on Wednesday

I'm seriously contemplating doing a Saddle Sore 1000 on Wednesday.

Below is my planned route. My basic goal was to visit Grand Canyon and Zion on the same ride. So from Phoenix, to get the miles, it's Winslow, Grand Canyon, Page, Zion, Las Vegas, and back to Phoenix.

I'm still contemplating a couple of minor clothing choices, but my Vegas is all set. The motor is running strong and normal. The weather is nearly perfect right now (high temp should be 90 on Wed in Phoenix, 70 at GC, and 65 in Zion, which means I'll be riding in roughly 60's-80's the whole time. Clear and comfortable).

Yes, first ride over 500 miles. Nearly every Wednesday I do 300-400 miles to various points around Arizona.

I've driven 1000 miles in a day many times, but this will be my first time on a bike.

I should arrive in Las Vegas around 7pm or so, which offers a good bail out point, if I'm cooked at that point. Plus, a night in Vegas is never really a bad thing.

Default Good Luck

I was just wondering if your Vegas is stock? I have a 2009 Jackpot and am still wondering how far I could ride at one time. Most of my trips are short, 100 miles or less but I keep saying that I want to do a long ride sometime. Since you seem to be doing longer rides as a routine with a similar bike thought I would see if you needed to make any changes from stock to be comfortable. Thanks and may the weather stay good for you the whole trip, have fun

Route looks pretty good. Im guessing since this is your first IBA you preparing yourself as well as the bike. The IBA tips are pretty good reading! http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aow.cfm

Clothing is a key to success to avoid dehydration. Pack some water with you and wear your riding jacket. My best combo in your temps has been long sleeve riding shirt with mesh jacket. That wind will suck the life right out of you. Boot straps for your pant legs or that flapping calf leg will suck about 10 hours in. Lip balm and sun screen. Even the full face can lead to a sunburnt nose.. hehehe

Remember that every gas stop is a possible 15 minutes lost so I try to hit the first stop in and out and the next take the stretch. Steady milage saves time too, where your Vega gets the the optimum MPG and a good cruising speed. You got some mountains to overcome it looks so know your possible gas stops. Planning leads to a great memorable ride, enjoy and don't forget to post a ride report with IBA in the subject line.

Looks like a fun, scenic route!
Hope you have a fun and safe ride! Looking forward to the story.

Receipts are very important. I write the mileage on each receipt and put them in a Zip Loc bag.

Every minute stopped is a mile lost.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've got the awesome new Victory leather Attitude jacket with removal fleece hoodie. It's so versatile. Also have leather chaps. With both, wind is well managed, and temps can be down to the 30's without an issue (not that I expect to see temps that low). But I've got a mesh Victory jacket as well as a perforated Dianese leather one. But most likely I'll do it with the Attitude jacket, due to it's versatility.

To miker, my bike is not stock. In stock form, a 100 mile ride was a fatiguing excursion. For me, the best, and most important 2 upgrades have been my Mustang touring seat (2 up version) and the mid Victory windshield. Those two changes enabled longer rides. I've also got floorboards, lowers, Kuryakan grips, PowerCommand V, X Bow exhaust, HID headlight, saddle bags, sissy bar, and trunk, and probably some other things I'm forgetting. It doesn't look as Vegas-like any more, but it's comfortable.

most I've ever done in a day is about 500 miles. not too bad, I guess, and it typically is mountain roads and secondary highway, so I spend like 8-10 hours in the saddle sometimes. Sounds like a fun ride, tho.

You can call me Billy. Or Luci. But don't call me Shirley.
