Default Stupid question!

I thought that Canada was metric and the United States was SAE.
That being said, I was surprised when I started to do some wrenching on a 2005 Kingpin and I had to use metric tools. I thought that the Victorys were made in USA?

US is growing tired of being backwards - a lot of US made products (including cars) are now (and have been for quite a while) developed with the metric system. Some branches of engineering are also pushing to switch to the metric system.

If we export SAE goods, folks around the world have to buy SAE tools to work on those SAE goods, but they won't, therefore they would not buy our product. We have to export our goods in metric. And if we manufacture metric and SAE at the same time, that's not very efficient either. So the solution is to switch to metric.

Besides the political aspect, the metric system is the way to go when it comes to measurements. You can do all metric conversions in your head, but when it comes to the Imperial system, good luck with that. ;-)

This brings up an interesting point.

Harley is opening production in India. Will they be metric?

Most harley nuts and bolts are metric anyway. Just like most of their bike parts.

Most all of are parts come from the auto world and most parts are from over seas where ever thing is metric.
Keep in mind some metric bolts are the same size as SAE.

yes the wonderful world of threads,I started my working life at British Steel which was nearly all imperial threads (bsw,bsf,ba etc) then went to work at 3M viskase and Ford (all in uk) and they were nearly 100% metric now back at Tata Steel (formerly British steel) and its even more confusing as its a huge mixture so my toolbox now has a vast collection of metric,imperial,ba and af spanners.

Harley in China is mixed SAE / metric, same as in the USA, but the bikes are imported already assembled. I've read that the Indian production will be assembly only (no manufacturing), with all parts imported, so it will probably be effectively the same.

Well, at least until manufacturing commences overseas (publicly announced, that is).

By the way, there is no McDonalds' quarter pounder here!
