Default Doran Mfg TPMS Tire Pressure Monitoring System INSTALL

I just recently installed a Doran TPMS on my XCT. I took some pictures along the way:

They usually go for $199 for a 2-wheel motorcycle system. I got a brand new one on eBay for $140 shipped:



The kit comes with everything you'll need for the install:



The actual tire sensors can be installed on the exterior of the wheel, or the interior.



I didn't want to take off my tire just so I could install it on the interior of the tire, so I decided to just install the sensors on the exterior valve stem. They just screw in, it couldn't be easier, and they do not interfere with anything.



The next step was to find a place to install the actual monitor. I mounted it on the left handlebar using the mounting bracket and rubber handlebar spacer they provided. The monitor itself is small, out of the way, yet still easily visible:



The next step was to wire the monitor for power. I ran the wires through the fairing, and into my Fuzeblock which I already previously installed on the bike. I set it to the "always on" position, so I don't have to wait for it to connect to the sensors upon every start up:



All powered up:



The last step was just to program the sensors and "pair" it with the monitor. This was a very simple step and just involved pushing a few buttons, and entering the numbers from the sensors. The monitor then recognizes the appropriate sensor and is now constantly monitoring the tire pressure for the front/rear.

Now if I want to know the current tire pressures, I literally just have to walk over to the bike, press one button, and it will display/scroll through both front/rear pressure readings. It's so much easier than the old way of having to get down on the ground to try and check the pressure using a gauge.



Some things I like about this unit:

-Small form factor. I've seen other systems out there with humongous displays and I prefer something small and unobtrusive. I've also checked out the systems which use a keychain, but I wanted something I could easily see while riding. One could always velcro the keychain on the dash I suppose, but the Doran just looks so much cleaner.

-Weatherproof. I don't have to worry about this system getting wet out in the elements.

- It's always on. I don't have to wait for the system to recalibrate/capture the pressures whenever I turn off the bike. I can get the current pressures instantly in real time. It does have a very tiny drain on the battery if done this way, but I would have to leave the bike unattended for months for this to happen. I have always plugged in all my bikes to a Battery Tender when garaged at home, so this is never going to be an issue. If one wanted he/she could also wire the monitor to a switched power source, but the only downside to that is that you'd have to wait up to 6 minutes from the time you power it up until you get a tire reading. That's when the monitor pairs with the sensors and acquires the pressures.

- There's a bright red LED light on the monitor when the pressure drops a certain amount below the baseline pressure (you will set this amount yourself during programming). The light is VERY bright and you cannot miss it. They also provide a remote light which you can wire to any location you want if you install the monitor in a non-visible location (like under the seat or something).

All in all I really love this system and it's money well spent in my opinion. Less worry, less work, more riding!

Nice write up, thanks for the pictures also. I've been looking at the Doran for a while now and I'm thinking of getting one , maybe the one with four sensors , two for the bike and two for the trailer.

Back when we had our Goldwing this was the one a lot of Wing riders use and all of them where very happy with the Doran, one of the biggest reasons was the display was waterproof.

Do it, you won't regret it.

I love how it's waterproof/weatherproof. No worries when you ride in the rain or when it's time for a wash

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention...

The little monitor display is LED backlighted as soon as you press the button, so even if you're riding during hours of darkness, you will still be easily able to see your readings:

Congratulations! Sounds like the best system going. My question is: you have stated that the monitors must be screwed into or on the stem. Is the monitor screw head a metal or plastic housing? Does the valve remain in the stem? The reason I ask is that I fear a complete, sudden loss of air if any debris knocks off the monitor at speed. Just how strong is this monitor?

Good set up. I like the way you hooked it up to a fuseblock you previously installed. It takes so little juice that running it always on is no big drain on the battery. I see you are running the same speakers I am. They do sound good; especially with an amp.

If I were buying a TPMS today; this would be the one.

When you say monitors, I'm going to assume you meant sensors. Those are the parts that screw onto the valve stems. The sensor screw head is made of a brass colored metal inside, and the entire housing is plastic. The valve does remain in the stem, no need to take it off. If you need to fill the tire with air, then just unscrew the sensor from the valve stem, fill up with air, and screw them back on. It's that easy. I have no fear of the valve stem sensors getting knocked off from their positions, they're on there pretty good.

Thanks. That fuzeblock came off from my old bike. I took it off before I traded it in, and installed it on my new XCT. It's really handy, and makes installing/wiring up accessories a breeze

Have to ask how do you its telling you the truth
The cap thats on the valve stem how do you know it didn't change the balance of the tire/wheel
would this unit work with nitrogen
I know that the pencil air pressure gages are junk for accuracy

I'll chime in here...
I have installed the TireGard system--similar, but with a fob type monitor which I hang on the latch loop in the left side case. No need to have my PSI in front of me all the time IMO. To answer your concerns....
+ To determine its accuracy, compare with a gauge you know is right.
+ I have Ride-On sealer/balancer in my tires so those caps don't have any effect on the balance.
+ PSI is PSI whatever the gas. Nitrogen makes no difference other than it doesn't expand as much when warmed.
