Man was I impressed.
Headed out to my local Vic dealer today and test rode a Cross Country and a Vision for about a half hour each.
Took the XC out first:
Immediately I noticed that it does not feel as heavy as it really is. I had ridden my Hammer S up there, so I was able to make an instant comparison. It felt almost as light, and a bit better balanced. Taking off and going low speed through the parking lot on the way out, I expected to be a bit shaky, but it was remarkably stable and light on its feet. I was pleasantly surprised.
Then as soon as you leave the dealer, you're greeted with a nice set of gentle curves, so I decided to hit them as hard as I do on my Hammer. I soon realized it leans FAR more easily, so I could hit them with a little more speed.
Took it out to the highway, and fell in love with the cushy seat. Well, anything beats a stock Hammer seat
Loved almost everything about it, but had a few concerns...
1) All the extra weight kills the power. It was suhlowwwwwww. So I have to consider the extra cost of adding at LEAST 20hp to be satisfied
2) It was really buzzy. At anything over 60mph it had mild vibration that never went away on the freeway. I'm hoping that there is a cure for this?
3) The stock windscreen is too short. Threw all the wind straight to my face/helmet, so it's either live with double vision and a headache, or get a taller screen. At least this is an easy fix.
All in all though, I LOVED it, and fully expect this to be my next purchase. Plenty of room on the floorboards to stay comfy, would also be adding highway pegs to the crash bar anyway. I thought they would seriously hinder my cornering, but had no issues.
Then I took out a Vision.
I loved pretty much everything about it. It had all the good stuff the XC had, a few more cool gizmos onboard, and LOVED the retractable windscreen (that's the shite right there)... BUT....
1) I have come to the solid conclusion that I need to be retired before it looks right under me. It just screams "old man bike" like a Goldwing. It would take $20k in mods to make it "cool" and who knows how all that chopping, lowering and stuff would affect the handling anyway.
2) It's effin' heavy. It rode well at low speeds coming out of the aprking lot, but the first time I had to stop and put my feet down... DAYUM. Yep, you feel it. And it lumbers to the left, which I'm not used to. The weight likes to dump heaviest to the left (primary weight I assume).
3) I almost felt like I was in a car instead of on a motorcycle. Don't get me wrong, it was nice, but almost too plush. The seat is as comfy as my bed (loved that), but behind that huge dash, monster fairing, cruise control on, radio blaring, and screen fully up... I shit you not, I had the inclination to rest my elbow up on the "window sill", but luckily I realized there were no doors.
It was a nice ride, no doubt, and the way I would prefer to ride a 1000 mile day, but it made me feel numb to the road, and well... it looked too geriatric for me.
So as I ride home on my Hammer, I began realizing how lazy it feels in the turns. How odd the bars are shaped, and how that 250 tire really affects those turns. Until now, I've just been used to it, so it poses absolutely no problem for me (the dealer noted that he usually sees 2" chicken strips on most folks' 250 tires, but I have zero chicken strips and scraped up pegs), but man, that XC was EFFORTLESS in the corners.
I want one.
I want one bad.
I think i shall have to buy one
