Default Quick question

Hey guys, I had a quick question for you all. I did an oil change today and decided to try a little heavier oil then the stock 20w-40, I bought 20W50 from royal purple. I went with it because I heard good things and it was cheaper then the standard kit. With clutch pulled in and sitting in 1st at a stop light i can feel the bike pull a little. The clutch cable and clutch are all adjusted correctly, so i can rule that out. I was wondering if anyone out there was using the same oil and feels that pull with clutch pulled in at a stop light. If it doesn't get a little better I will have to change oil and filter again and go back to stock oil kit.

To me it sounds like your oil is too viscous but lots of folks here run that same oil in their bikes and they swear by it. I have so far been a total bozo and only use the Vic oil in my bike so I have no experience with Royal Purple or other too heavy oils.

I agree it has to be the oil just wondering if its normal or comes out of it over some time. I think that is all the kinda of oil royal purple sells for bikes. BTW i got the whole kit with K&N filter on Amazon for 47 bucks so I had to try it.

Honestly I would worry about it.....the oil will thin out over time as its used.

....and we are talking about a very slight pull right?

Yea very slight pull not enough to move me just a little extra brake to stop me when coasting. It just has me nervous but I know it's not the bike due to hours before the change all was well and now this so I guess if over time it goes away I might keep using this oil due to price. Also I will be using a IR gun to measure temps for the next couple days, one thing I was told is it lowers engine temps slightly not much but anything here in AZ would help on that. LOL

I don't understand guys switch oils like they do there underwear and all it does is screw up your clutch plates.
Thicker or heaver oil does not mean the bike will run cooler.
I think your little slipping now will get worse in time.

Stay with one oil you'll be happier in the long run

I understand since 2008 I had used victory oil only. Now motor was rebuilt I tried cheaper oil everyone raves about. Thought I could save a little money.

The thicker oil is acting as a viscous coupling between the steel and friction plates in your clutch. It will not cause clutch problems long term other than the slight pull you're feeling. It MAY however, make shifting a bit clunkier since there will be that little bit of extra drag on the clutch even when the clutch is pulled in. It may also make finding neutral more difficult, especially when stopped. Unless you ride in a very hot region you're probably going to be happier going back to a 40wt, the 50 really isn't going to gain you anything.

You are using MAX/CYCLE and not regular Royal purple right? I would still check your clutch adjustment in the morning. You can only do it on a cold bike. It is unusual that a JASO MA oil cause a problem right off the bat. You may have had an issue already existing. you say you just rebuilt the motor. Was the clutch involved in the rebuild or is it original? An oil change back to Vic oil may be cheaper than clutch job if your problem worsens. Good luck.

I am a fan of RP oils. I use Amsoil now with no issues. Of course I started using it early at around 5k. I didn't care for the Vic oils performance.
