Default New Tire Break in

Is there a process to break in a new tire?

10' XC Skulls
stock...for now
10' Hammer S (traded in for the Skulls)

Yeah you have to ride it but be carefull as new tires are slippery. Cheers

If memory serves it's typically gentle use for approx 500 miles.

I know new tires can be slippery. This being my first new front tire on this bike I was wondering if there is a break in process to get through the slippery phase quicker or an idea how long the slippery phase lasts. I just put on a Bridgestone G709.

I think this used to be a bigger problem due to mold release adhering to the tires. I don't think its much of an issue these days. I used to run sportbike tires out to the edges on my way back from a tire change. The only time I had an issue with a new set of tires was on a track at those speeds and on concrete. For whatever reason, the tires were okay on the blacktop, but for the first couple of laps, when I'd hit the concrete keyhole at Mid-Ohio the bike would slide out and scare the crap outta me. But even that only took a couple of laps to work out.

If you ride at moderate speeds, you'll likely never notice anything.

I went out to a empty parking lot and did some slow speed figure eights. I was able to scuff the tires all but the last 1/3 inch to the edge. I'll still keep it mellow for a while. It's cold today too. I'm sure with warmer weather and a few more miles there'll be nothing to worry about.

I always take it a bit easy for the first 100 miles after a tire change.

Yes, just a hundred miles or so, careful on turns at speeds. No mold release agents are used on motorcycle tires now and very few car tire makers use a release agent now. The slippery comes from the smooth tire mold. So the outer layer of rubber is glass smooth as well. Once that layer is scuffed you are good.
