Default Battery issues, baffled

I put this in the Jackpot section in error. I bought an 06 Jackpot 2 weekends ago. First weekend drove it home and put 350 miles on it. No problems. Changed oil, filter, S&S air filter. Drove about 40 miles and engine light came on, tried to get home, bike died, had to have it towed. Tested battery, it was dead. Replaced with new battery and put multimeter on it. 12.8 when bike is off, 13.8 and higher when bike is running. Took it out today, drove about 25 miles, engine light came on, speedo went off, bike died. Put old battery in that I charged and drove home about 3 miles, engine light came on, bike died, pushed it last block home. I have checked every cable, connection, etc: Any thoughts because this is driving me nuts.

Were it not for the speedo going down, it would sound like a fuel delivery issue. Maybe cleaning the throttle body? Wouldn't hurt.

There's another member here who sort went through the same thing. I don't remember the exact resolution, but it was heat related. Since it's been an average of 100deg since you bought it, this could be it. Try a search and check it out. If I find the post first I'll let you know where it is.

definitely a battery , electrical issue. Just charged up the battery and it runs fine. When the engine light comes on it starts to sputter and then just gives me enough time to pull over and then completely dead. Won't even turn over. Even a push and a popping clutch won't get it running again. Replace the battery with a fully charged one and boom all is good. This is worrying me because I had a long weekend ride planned but not going to until I figure this out. Plus I rode this morning it was in the low 80s.

Have you had a chance to test the battery after it dies?? Kind of sounds like the stater isn't charging your battery. Luckily, compared to HDs, they're easy to get to. IF that's what it is.

Loose connection in the 3 wire plug that goes from the stator to the regulator

I'm not an asshole...I just type that way

Kevin, hate to sound stupid but I will. What color is the number 3 wire and where does it start and end? I have plugged and unplugged, tightened every wire I can find. I cannot make the connection at the battery any tighter. If this wire was loose or not connected would it still show a 14 or so on the multimeter when the bike is running? Thanks. I feel like I am 16 and working on my car for the first time.

LOL...I know the feeling Dave. I'm learning a ton and loving every minute of it.

I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) Kevin is talking about the entire connector, not just one of the wires. Although it wouldn't be a bad idea to carefully inspect all three. You might want to disconnect it to inspect the contacts inside to make sure their good to go.

I've attached a pic from my '12 Vegas to show you. Hopefully they haven't changed this aspect too much in six years. Center of the pic is the 3wire connector, to the left of that is voltage regulator he is talking about. Hope this helps you out.

Sounds like something shorting intermittently. If you saw 13.8 V at the battery terminals while it was running, it wasn't shorted then. But something has to be drawing enough current that the alternator can't recharge the battery. That means the voltage would be dipping.

Do you see anything flickering like idiot lights or LCD displays?

Did you read the 13.8 V at the battery terminals while the bike was running?

I had a new bike once that came from the mfg with it's voltage regulator not correctly or completely latched on. That bike exhibited some bizarre electrical behavior before it worked itself loose and the battery eventually drained, the bike died and left me stranded in a coming electrical storm. At least God was trying to provide me a little electricity!

Good luck with yours.

no flickering. Thanks for the pic, those are the ones I have really gone over. I just can't figure out the 13.8 reading while the bike is running. This would mean to me that the charging system is charging. I am hoping it is just a bad battery. Otherwise going to go out in the 105 degree heat and unplug and replug every damn wire on the bike. I even checked the fuses because I heard that they could be a problem. All good.

It's only 93 now Dave LOL. Kiddin' man, trying to bring some light.

Sorry if I missed it, but what is the meter reading on the battery AFTER the bike dies?

check your PMs
