Default Intake and stage 1 map

I've tried the search function but I can't seem to find an answer to my question. I currently have an 08 Jackpot with stage 1 exhaust (shotgun) and filter installed. I do have the stage 1 reflash for my exhaust installed. I have ordered a Lloyds intake and a set of monster baffles to install. I also ordered a PCV because in the near future I am planning on installing cams into the bike. So my question is 2 parts really.
Will the stage 1 download support the new intake and exhaust baffles or do I run the risk of being lean? Second if the bike is running lean after the install do I need to revert back to the stock map in order to install the PCV and have it dyno tuned. My bike does have the occasional backfire on deceleration or hard acceleration between 1st and 2nd gear shifts. I know many say this is normal, but I would like to eliminate it as much as possible. This is not popping but an actual backfire. Any help would be appreciated.

You won't need to change back to a stock flash when you get your PCV. Are you getting the Auto Tune as well?

The backfiring leads me to think the pipes weren't installed exactly right and you have an intake leak on one or both of them. Some popping is expected but not backfires. I was able to get rid of most of the popping on an 09 JP I had after going to 2-1 pipes with the Lloydz IAV valve. I understand not everyone has the same results I did though.

Maybe one of our more knowledgeable Vic mech's will chime in.

I can only relate my experience in this situation. I also had the stage 1 download performed on my bike. Shortly after that I added a PCV with Autotune. After much experimentation and dyno'ing I found the bike ran best when I zero'd out the fuel map on the PCV and just ran the bike off of the Autotune AFR map.

My rationale and argument for why this works is that the PCV fuel map is making adjustments to the ECM stage 1 map (which is itself an adjustment to the stock map), and the Autotune is constantly adjusting the PCV fuel map. Ultimately, what you're after whether it's through dyno tuning or auto tuning is to maintain a consistent AFR at any given throttle/RPM...and that's what the Autotune does 100% of the time without all the middleman maps and regardless of any changes to the bike or riding conditions.

Thanks for the replies. I came to the same conclusion about an exhaust leak causing the backfires so I have ordered some softer exhaust gaskets from Lloydz and will install those when I remove the pipes to install the baffles. I am also installing the intake this weekend and will be careful to check for intake leaks after the install. As for the auto tune that may be a route I take because while I do have dyno's near by I have no experience with the operators. I usually do most of my own tuning using datalogging software and a zeitronix afr unit, but there is not a convenient way to run the bike down the road while carrying a computer to log the air fuel ratios. I'm not really concerned with peak hp, but am looking to build a reliable great running bike that sounds great and doesn't backfire. Hopefully that isn't a pipe dream!

It's definately not a pipe dream, and if you look around in this forum you will find any number of good Autotune maps to get you started. You may have to do some tweaking but if you're used to the concepts of injection tuning then you shouldn't have much problem.

It's too bad you don't have an Autotune on it now because you could likely determine whether you have a leak if the Autotune kept maxing out the fuel trim adjustments on the cells trying to compensate for the leak. Don't be surprised if the softer gastkets don't have an effect though. You may be confusing normal lean AFR exhaust popping with backfires. When the dealer flashed my ECU it didn't help my popping at all as their performance map was pretty lean just like their factory map. The only fix I found was mapping the AFR's myself.

I don't know if it's a normal pop or not it seems pretty loud to me, but I'm picky about how my machines run. I did just order the auto tune for the simple fact that I won't have to trust someone else with the tuning. I'll do a lot of reading over the next few days to get a handle on how the auto tune does its thing and hopefully it will be a painless tuning process. Thanks for the help.
