Cool Stage 1 exhaust, question

Hello all. Well I have about 1700 miles on my Ball and I need some more sound / power / style out of it.

Was looking for a setup but everything I see just doesn't seem to compliment the bike much except the swept system which is not available anymore.

So, my plan was to have my shop fab up a set of pipes. Free flowing and all that. My question/concern is simply, once complete, the only thing I should need to do is just get the ecu (calibration card) done and the stage 1 air cleaner done right?

I also read somewhere that the air cleaner is optional. Anyone with knowledge is welcome to respond and provide guidance.

I would ask my local victory dealer but this place does not strike me as knowledgeable. The dealership is a myriad of brands and I think the technicians are "all purpose" and not exactly victory educated.

The hacker rippers are similar in design to the Victory swept pipes and can be seen http://www.hackerpipes.com/products/victory.php here along with some of their other pipes.

As far as adding pipes and not a performance air system, I'm not sure getting the ECM flashed would be necessary since it's calibrated for a change in both exhaust and air intake. If you're concerned about it you could always add a fuel manager, then you'd be able to adjust things both now and later should you decide to add a performance air system.

I'm not sure fabbing up a set of pipes would be a good idea. A certain amount of back pressure is necessary in the design of a pipe to aid in the proper exhaust of combusted fuel. It might sound great but not be so healthy for your bike.

The engine is just a big air pump. If you are opening the air out, you really ant to let more air in for it to run well. The prob with fabed pipes is you will not just be able to have the ECU remapped. You are going to have to get it dyno tuned to have any chance of getting it right. You will also need a power commander or something close to it for making the changes. So you are looking at at least $700 to just get the Power Commander and the mapping done. Your call.

You say to run well, so are you saying it will run poorly with just the pipes alone? The reason I ask is because past bikes I have had, specifically my 2012 Harley fat bob had no issues with just an exhaust change.

What are your thoughts?

It all depends on how much more pressure the pipes let out. Slip ons may not be a prob. A fabed up whole set of pipes will prob be a problem.

I'm not sure pipes by themselves are going to be much of a factor in either producing power or general engine performance. Air intake volume is a much greater factor than exhaust in that regard. The reason ECM's get changed when both pipes and air intake are changed is because the air to fuel ratio is affected by the greater volume of air coming into the system. It's not that pipes have NO effect, but they're only responsible for helping exhaust the combusted mixture through backpressure. I could see how poorly designed pipes that don't have appropriate backpressure would make the engine less efficient and dirtier, but a set of well designed pipes by themselves wouldn't affect the air to fuel ratio that much, if at all.

Congrats Bert on your purchase and I am sure you have miles of sMiles coming your way. I know I am running a V92 but the concept is the same. Do the air filter too! My ride had a Stage 1 flash and pipes (very well ventilated) with a stock air box and a K&N filter in it. I opened the airbox up and a NOTICIBLE improvement in performance as well as sound believe it or not. Took it one step further and added the K&N big sucker on there and WOW! Crack that throttle and you can hear that engine gulping in the air as well as another very noticable improvement in performance.

Bottom line from my experience is do the air as well as the exhaust. Dunedin is hitting the nail on the head. Since I rode about 5,000 with the stock air and then another 5k with the big sucker, I know without out a doubt the performance and SOUND is better.
