Default "Check engine" warning light

Got 4200 miles on my 2012 XCT.... was on a ride today and on the way home this light came on. First time I have seen it except for when you first turn on the key. I had about 2 mi to the next town so I decided to stop there and check it out. But, after about 2 minutes, the light went off. Engine was running fine so I rode it another 25 miles home. Light never came back on.
Took a look at the owners manual and it refers to "error codes" on the display when the light comes on.... don't remember seeing these and of course when you shut the bike down , they are lost.
Should I be concerned about this? Called my dealer and the service guy said to bring it in next week.... might just be a bad sensor. ???
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Walt

If you don't see it again, don't worry about it.

Please add your bike's year and model to your signature. Here's why.

If you use the mode button under the clutch lever to scroll thru the screens you may see an error code. Happened to someone I know - light would come on for about 30 seconds then go out. When he scrolled thru the screens he saw a code that turned out to be a "too lean fuel mixture" code. He was running stage one pipes with out a PCV or new map. When he disconnected the O2 sensors the light and the error code quite coming on.

Light came on again today...briefly.
Error code: 1, 7, 520 193
According to tech at dealer, this is the "Idle air control position out of range".
Taking her in tomorrow morning.....

Before you throw her in your dealer's arms, you might want to consider doing what porchdawg did. Disconnect the O² sensors. Not only it could solve the problem, but it will allow you to run a bit richer, cooler, prolong engine life, etc. And you avoid the gamble of having the dealer hack at it, and really mess something up.

2012 with 4200 miles is under warranty. I would say take it in. Anything they muck up they gotta fix. Anything they find, they gotta fix.......no charge.

Air leaks or air restrictions in the IAC air supply or delivery hoses will not cause a trouble code in the system, but are the most common cause of idle control problems. Always be sure hoses are connected properly and securely when idle control problems exist. This is out of the manual then it states to to do tests to see if connector pin visual inspection, continuity- Verify ECM to IAC motor harness connector. Verify battery voltage is supplied to IAC motor on the VIO/PK wire from engine relay.... So as you can tell it could be a hose, connector, wire harness, motor, relay.....

It gets better..... arranged to take it to dealer this morning. BUT, now it won't start as the battery is dead! Unbelievable.

Update: Was going to try and jump start it and noticed that both of the battery connections were loose.... very loose. Tightened them down and guess what, she started right up.
This is most likely the cause of the warning light coming on intermittently. Going to take her in anyway and get it checked out under warranty.
The tech at the dealer said that he has seen three 2012s with loose battery connections recently. He thinks that the bolts are too long and they bottom out before they get tight enough and after alittle vibration they loosen up. They are going to install shorter bolts.

Looks like problem solved with replacement battery cable connector bolts. Rode it 75 miles home and no check engine light.
All 2012 XCT and XC owners should check their battery cables! My dealer said I was the third XCT they have seen with electrical problems due to loose battery cables. The bolts are too long.....
