Default Two Trans threads in a week?

Well, mine is a bit different than "sloppy" I think


On my last ride, I somehow missed 2nd gear (hitting neutral) at least 5 times in a ~200 mile ride. I wasn't being hard on her at the time, actually was shifting at around 3k or so. There was also one time last week, that it popped out of 2nd a few seconds after shifting and went into neutral.

Now, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, the bike rode fine for 1,500 or so miles after having the "star gear" replaced along with the clutch. That is, the small gear that actually clicks the transmission into gear. The first cog on it had somehow snapped. It never caused any shifting issues and had been like that for 12k or so miles. Only change I noticed by replacing it was when I am in first, the shifter doesn't move down anymore. It's "bottomed out". Before, it would move freely down about an inch or two, even while in 1st.


Anyone else have this problem? It's a barnett clutch with stock springs etc fwiw

If clutch is adjusted correct then you should look at your linkage.
in this photo the shifter dog should be pointing straight down. If not you have to change yours.
The owners book says from floor board to center of shifter peg should be 2 3/4 inches. Use that as starting point. Then adjust up and down for your foot

Thanks buddy... Ill look when I get home. I'm going on a couple thousand mile trip in a couple weeks and don't want anything going wrong

Are you wearing different shoes? Maybe shifting like Bruce Jenner?

Haven't been home yet and haven't worn anything but these 13 steel toes. Would you like to see them up close?

This happens to me on occasion , sometimes I get perfect 1-2 shifts , clacky /notchy 1-2 shifts and sometimes it pops out and goes to neutral . The latter pisses me off . When I have to come to a stop , my 1-2 shift is a constant concern to me , all other gears shift like butter . And , I shift like David Banner after he turned GREEN .

Mine used to carry on when I first got the bike.
I learned on here to preload lightly then jam it hard into the next gear particularly second.
Treat it like a Muncie or a Toploader in a muscle car.
Slam it in!
pussyfoot around and it'll play up on you.

Well, one would think to go back to the last change. Perhaps something amiss on the change out. Anyone can goof, so don't be testy with your mechanic. LOL
First, make sure the clutch is adjusted right, and done so when overnight cool. Then as VJ suggested look over the linkage, and adjust to your liking. I like mine just off my toe when it is under the lever, and it helped with the funky Vic shifting when I did this.
There was another thread recently about shift problems. I think the guy actually bent the shift link adjusting rod. Said he wasn't being rough with it, FWIW. He was advised by several members to check the linkage, be sure it was correct, adjusted and not binding, and did so after he bent something, problem solved. Live and learn.
Your problem seems different than the one I was talking about, but do the easy stuff first and pay attention to detail. If you aren't willing to, do you think someone else is?
