Default PCV --> Maximus

I see a bunch of folks that are taking out their PowerCommander V's and replacing it with the Maximus. What does the Maximus do that the PCV doesn't? What's the benefit?

For starters......

Variable timing control from 350 RPM on up.
No possible failure of external unit.
No lag in response due to piggyback unit.
Adjust rev limits on all gears.
Utilizes closed loop system versus bypassing O2 sensors.

I believe it will give you codes when something goes wrong.
The big thing is you don't need a dyno you just need a shop that can help with the tuning. With the Max you don't need a timing wheel

Will not throw codes. But....Additional software technoresearch has, is supposed to allow you to interface with Maximus for pulling codes. Needs improvement.

Dyno shop can help. But mobile dyno feature allows owner/rider log data. And data would need to be manipulated by a shop to remove false spikes and such to create more accurate fuel maps.

Timing wheel is still required. OEM preferably, but setting aftermarket back to zero will help. Eliminates timing adjustment confusion when adjusting tables.

Great thread and posts, thank you!

So the Maximus isn't a separate box like my PCV? Is it a software package that re-programs the bike's ECU? Would my stock O2 sniffers get reinstalled along with my stock timing wheel? I'm glad I kept those parts regardless.

Is Maximus sort of a smarter Autotune system?

Will you get a 'better' tune with Maximus compared to a PCV with a dyno?

Maximus is a box/interface that gets plugged in in between laptop and ECM/ECU for temporary data management or logging during mobile dyno/tuning and re-flashing. Once tuning process is done and final re-flash of ECM/ECU is done......Maximus is then removed. Does not stay connected like PCV. All of the timing/afr/fuel mapping in now on ECM/ECU. Be sure to keep it as it becomes ECM/ECU Vin specific.

Yes factory O2 sensors are re-inserted and used after tune. Original wheel is used or aftermarket one is set to +|- 0 degrees.
ECM/ECU on bike with closed loop system already works like an auto tune. After tune, the parameters for the auto tune like functionality is no longer fighting against missing O2 sensors and a piggyback tuner.

Excellent, thank you! So could, or does a tuner shop just use a single Maximus 'box' and tune multiple bikes with it? Does the customer end up paying for just a tune instead of a box and a tune? Do you still use a dyno like with a PCV? Two more questions and then I'm done.

1. Does or can the Maximus help the tuning professional get a 'better' tune than a PCV? I had a dyno tune about 43K miles ago. Reinstalling the oem timing wheel would eliminate the chance of the variable timing wheel slipping. Plus the elimination of the PCV box under the left side cover would be nice. But then reinstalling the oem O2 sensors clutters things up a bit.

2. Would or could my CCT benefit from going from my current variable timing wheel/PCV set-up to a Maximus tune?

Its a cleaner install Mark. No ATS. The Maxiumus still has to be dyno tuned by a shop or using the Maximus version of the Auto Tune. The whole package will run around 7-800 bucks. From what I understand, you can use other profiles as well. I have ridden a bike with it and it is a very nice tune. Nice smooth low to high end and you can add the 6,200 rpm shift in all gears. With the Maximus, there is a guy who sends a laptop with the autotuning tools you use and ship back when its done.

Or Kevin, Rylan etc...can all dyno tune it with the Maximus. I test rode one of Kevins Maximus tuned bikes another guy I know has...and man it was nice.

I bought this up on another site before the tuners started with them and got flamed. I have tuned bike ECU's prior with Triumph, Yamaha, and HD and have always been an advocate of that method.

Now its the rage. For good reason. No extra wiring harnesses everywhere, no ATS, and you can change the tune when you want.

However, if you already have the PCV and ATS etc....unless you are like me and don't mind peeing away a few bucks for a cleaner setup...the PCV and ATS are fine. Proven, do the job well.

The nice part of that is...for people with a tighter budget there will be a lot of used PCV and ATS wheels along with autotunes for sale!

One Maximus per bike as they are married to bike once plugged in and initialized. Customer pays for device and tune. A shop can tune either on a dyno or using mobile dyno feature while riding. I do the latter.

Maximus utilized oxygen sensors as a closed loop system as designed from factory instead of running a closed loop system in open loop mode via PCV. So I will say, better tune than PCV. I have swapped out PCVs and ATSs on my personal bikes. It eliminates 99.9% of the popping that most cant tune out of bikes using PCV and ATS.
