Default Garmin Weather and Sat help

Installed the Victory GPS Mount wirring in my Zumo 665 and GMX 40Antenna.

Before installing the OEM wiring the GPS/Antenna was working fine interfaced thru a J&M CB/Comms unit.

Now withthe Victory GPS mount/harness I get GPS and MP3 tothe system but can't seleect SAt radio. I get a statemetn on the GPS saying needs update. No sat Radio no NEXRAD weather is available.

So the question is this: what controls the radio selection? and is there a software lock that needs to be unlocked in order for this to work?

Reason for the change, is the J&M unit picked up too much electronic noise and had crappy sound quality, not to mention that it would not play thru the external speakers.

I would do what the msg says, and update the software on the GPS. If that doesn't work, I'd take the bike to the nearest dealer and have them make sure you have the latest radio software as well.

I frequently update the software along with the maps on my Garmin 665.

So this is second hand info and I'm not geeky enough to know the why's but here's my take away from when I read up on the 665 before install.

The harness for the 660 which is what Victory provides looks the same as the 665 harness but is not. The result and message you are getting is consistent with results and messages others who tried that install got.

Some techies have busted open the mount and found it to be somehow different internally or at least there are those that took a soldering iron and a radio shack credit card to it, apparently without success. I don't know, maybe they did succeed. I lost interest whenever flux capacitors and solder and whatnot entered the conversation.

Maybe there is a way to make the 665 sat functions work on the handlebar if your talents lean to that kind of activity, but it's hardware, not software.

I installed the harness/ mount that came with the 665 and tied it to the Sat Nav port on the bike harness. All sources play through the bike sound system and the override functions of the GPS work but I have to control the XM and MP3 functions on the 665. Sound is fine except that when listening to MP3's I have to keep the Zumo volume at 100% or the sound cuts in and out for seconds at a time. Curious.

Good catch Pop. Yes, I had to swap out the "innards" from the Victory supplied mount with the ones that came with the 665. I guess I had presumed that by now Victory had upgraded their harness to work with the 665.

There is a writeup on this somewhere, but essentially, you take apart the mount (the black plastic assembly with the contacts that press against the GPS), and swap the circuit board. Be careful with the tiny little plunger spring... don't lose it. This surgery only requires a few minutes..... and is easy, other than tiny spring and screws.

POP,
I was kind of leaning to the mount being different or at least wired differently to the bike.

Called Annapolis Victory and all I got was Call Garmin. Called Garmin and all I got was Call the OEM.... rinse and repeat.

What I know is this:
The Gramin Harness pigtail is very different from the Victory Supplied one. The Victory harness has a single connector to interface with the bike and a Mini USB type connector for the Antenna.
The Garmin supplied harness is a multiconnector madusa type connector to include audio out and in as well at a USB for the Antenna.

Garmin Mount the system worked as advertised XM/Weather/ MP3.
Victory Mount XM and Weather not connected showing a type of update required ( Not a Garmin Message).

Searching might have to gin up the old Mount and wire it to the Victory Connector.

Gunslinger,
Thank for the confirmation. Figured it was a mount issue.

One caveat to the Victory harness... the XM radio in the 665 will only play in MONO mode..... at least that's my recollection. I opted to use the built in XM radio in my Vision so I can make use of the console presets and controls. Yes, I have two XM subscriptions on the bike (and two antennas), one for the bike's XM radio, and one to drive WX Radar and Traffic on the Garmin 665.

Gunslinger,
I have been searching the forum, no luck on the innards swap thread. Since you have done this what is involved?

Can the Garmin (665) harnes be adapted or is it easier to swap the guts of the mount?

Cheers
