I haven't heard a set after this mod but Kevin Cross (KevinX) says leaving a 3" stub on the Y pipe end of the Tri Ovals makes them sound very nice. Therefore the inner Tri Ovals pipe is mostly removed, all but 3" where it's welded to the Y. I have a brand new set of chrome Tri Ovals in the garage but I haven't taken them apart to do that. I also just had a dyno tune Nip & Tuck using my Raging Cajun Medium Low & Throaty mufflers so I doubt I'll be changing back to Tri Ovals anytime soon.

All the best,

Mark

I looked quite a few threads and videos up on the "thrush or glasspack" mod. Broggy talk me into doing it. LOL I think he said he used a 16" "bullet" glass pack, I went with the longest I could fit in the OEM can. I think it was 20 or 21". It is a job and half to pound them things in. So my thought if I was to do it again is, Cut of the intake side of can about 4-6" long and pound muffler into that. Measure out how long you need on the output side to have 4-6" and cut the rest off the can and just use the muffler it's self instead of trying to pound it into the can. It is only a few thousandths different than the OEM can so you could still use heat shields. Tack weld the mount brackets to mufflers and your done.
I went with the longer inserts because I was worried about it being to loud for us on long trips. I like the sound. Got some roar under throttle but mellow at a cruise. I think Broggy told me his were a bit loud for him at a cruise situation so I went a bit longer. They make them as short as like 4 or 6 inch I think. Jones mufflers from Summit Racing. Under $30 bucks a side for the muffler when I bought.

You should definitely talk to Dave from Raging Cajun. He has tried dozens of variations and will talk you right through what works for your preferences and what modifications you have on your bike. I had Tri Ovals on my CCT for 41K miles. IMHO, they sounded better as the miles rolled on. But I never got a compliment on their sound. I asked Dave if he could use the Tri Ovals and install his Medium Low & Throaty set up in them. He said he wasn't able to. I now have a set of his Medium Low & Throaty and love the sound at all rpm ranges. And yes, I get a lot of nice compliments on their sound. It's not always worth the time and expense to reinvent and redo what has already been done.

All the best,

Mark

Ditto on Ragin Cajun low & throaties! Wonderful pleasant deep rumble at idle...i barely hear the exhaust at cruise (i wear a full helmet & ear plugs) but when you crack the throttle they give off a great sound. But not annoyingly loud... or "harsh" like a lot of aftermarket pipes can sound. They maintain their rich sound. Very reasonably priced and Dave is a gem to deal with.

I had 2 friends with Vics visit last week. They had heard about these but not heard them. I fired up the bike...they looked at each other, nodded & smiled

Default 3” baffle

Here’s my 3” baffle for tri-ovals not wrapped in the pic but sounds better with wrapped insulation.

Wow, that looks very interesting. Before you added the baffle, did you try them with just a 3" stub left on the Y pipe?

Mark
