Default Can't shift to First Gear

I have two Vics, 2012 Cross Roads and 2012 Vegas both seem to have the same issue. I have been off riding for about 8 weeks (surgery) and went out to take them both for a ride. First I drained all the gas and put fresh gas in them.
On the Vegas: When I pulled it out of the garage I had a tough time finding Neutral. Didn't think much about it but when I started out, could't get into first! 2nd and past I can get to fine.
On the XR, Got Neutral just fine but again won' go into first.

Don't know why not riding them would cause this but there must be some adjustment I need to make or process to free them up?

Thanks

Neal, Marco Island Florida-2012 Vegas, 2012 Cross Roads

take off in second, run it up through the gears then go back down, may be all it needs

weakest link in the shift mechanism is the shift ratchet, the slightest burring of the edges of the claw will have it slipping past the starwheel.
Its good to fit the correct thickness oil drainplug washer to the shift shaft as you refit the primary, stops the sideways play that adds to the shift ratchets problems.

Start with the simple things first. Lube the external shift linkage. Sometimes they go dry and won't operate the internals right. Just some spray lube or white lithium grease will do.

If it that doesn't work then you might have a bent 'something' in the primary. If that isn't it then it's something in the transmission.

Check the clutch cable adjustment. If you don't know what it is, it's in the owners manual.

Strange they'd both do that after only 8 weeks sitting, and they were fine before that?
Like someone said, lube the linkages first up, and verify clutch adjustment is correct.
Whats the latest on this?

Famous tag line from the US tabloids "Enquiring minds need to know." I have had two parked for sometime myself and will be getting them out next week and would like to know what to look for if it happens to mine (with a heartfelt thanks in advance to the OP). LMYR

Long may you ride!

Rote Baron....If you kept an automatic trickle charger on the battery and had the tank full to the top with fuel stabilizer added, you should be OK. Check tire air pressures. Before firing it up, remove the plugs and spin the starter a few seconds - this will get the oil circulating after it has settled.
