Default Clutch Cable (Hopefully)

Well, after talking with a couple of Vic wrenches, I ordered a new clutch cable last night. 03 V92C - Clutch isn't slipping, chattering or making any noises...... but it engages very close to the end of the travel for the hand lever. I thought maybe the plates were thinning from use (25,000 miles), but was told they really don't do that. They work or they fail completely.... pretty much nothing in between. Kept getting feedback that it sounded like a stretched clutch cable. With the freeplay adjusted properly on the lever, the length of the cable seems like a relative thing to me. But I got feedback from several trusted wrenches that it was the cable. I figured what the heck, a new cable wouldn't hurt since the bike had the OEM original cable still on it. Gonna have my fingers crossed.... and hope it does the trick.

I like to adjust my clutch levers with almost zero play. I'll take all the slack out and just make sure that the barrel at the end of the cable can spin in the clutch arm to insure it's completely disengaged. I understand the concept of the free play but hate sloppy levers. I have a hard time believing a new cable will fix your problem but it never hurts to have a spare. I would try adjusting out most of the free play and see what happens.

Well the prescribed freeplay is almost non-existant, so there's not a floppy lever when riding.I really don't see how a cable can change the issue I'm having, but I'll find out. Should arrive this coming week and I'll put it on next weekend. I guess there's not a lot of knowledge about the issue I'm having on here. The silence is deafening...

if you are saying the clutch engages near the end of the travel where the clutch is all the way released, you need more slack not less, in the cable. if I am understanding correctly, and everything is working right you just want it to engage sooner, slacken up the cable.

25K on the cable could also have some contaminants in the cable itself restricting the movment... Havent seen that cause your problem but when I replaced the cable assembly on mine I did notice a MUCH easier pull and free play as a snap to set right on the money the first time. Like VJ said, keep the old one and let us know what you got afterwards.

Well, after 60+ hour weeks; sinus infection that laid me up for over a week and the onset of (ugh) yardwork...... Finally buttoned the bike back up and tried the new cable. Was very encouraged when I put it on because it engaged much earlier than before. I realized that this was "dry" and the motor not running. Fired her up today. the new Barnett cable is nice. Little easier pull. The clutch eagages just a little earlier than before, but not much. I have the maximum play, per the owners manual (which still isn't much). Can I tell a difference? Yes. Is it a big difference? No. But 2 things have been accomplished: 1- After talking with several Vic gurus and the clutch experts at Barnett, I'm fairly confidant that the clutch isn't about the shit the bed. 2- 27k miles on the original cluth cable..... I'm not worried about the cable breaking with a new Barnett cable. I know anything can happen, but you try and tilt the odds in your favor as much as you can. Got a few rides coming up and going to East Coast Sturgis in Little Orleons, MD. Feel better about the ride now.
