Default shift shaft free play

I pulled the primary cover to replace my clutch. Clutch engages and disengages fine and bike runs well in 1st gear. My problem is that the shift shaft pulls out of the case too much and I can not shift. If I push on the shaft inward it shifts as it should. I think its probaly the retaining ring on the shift shaft being bent but wanted some opinions.

Is the shift shaft retaining clip supposed to be tapered or should it be flat?

New .40 cent e clip solved the problem. Apparently I messed the old one up when installing the primary cover.
