Default New Slash coming - go ceramic?

Needless to say I'm stoked. Yes the Thor or Conquest Customs new 2 into 1 was my first pic but I stumbled on a fair affordable deal on some chrome pipes. Oddly not many YouTube's of this pipe but I've heard them at a dealer and they sound nasty! My neighbors will just love me. Hehe

These are ala carte. No baffles, heat shields or hardware. So hardware can come from RPW easy enough. The original baffles (RPW) I think I can get from Lloydz with a VFC and gaskets.

Yes I know.. chrome on a High-Ball?!?!?! Hear me out. These are pipes only. No heat shields so I'm thinking DEI Titanium wrap on the headers so just the ends in chrome exposed. Judging from pics I'm thinking it'd look cool and set off the bike with a little contrast.

If I find the chrome has any boo boos where plainly visible I could send out for a ceramic finish.. Maybe Jet-Hot? You guys have any recommendations for who to do that?

I have the RPW big slash. The heat on the rear cylinder was stripping the coating off the heat shield, so I thought about wrapping the exhaust with the Titanium wrap. Bought the wrap etc. Go to take off the heat shields and find out only the header shields are removable. Below the collector, the shield is welded to the pipe or it is just a pipe with a cone baffle in it and a tip inserted into the end.

Not sure I really wanted to wrap the pipe and the shield and try to wrap it in a way to smooth out the transition from collector to the shielded part at the end So i'm undecided between recoating or wrapping. Sounds like your slashes should be easier to wrap and more. Should look good with polished tips.

I just had a radical thought... In case there's some booger on the chrome on the exhaust ends that will be shown past the wrap.

Russell Mitchell (exile cycles) does a 'satin' look with a technique where he scotch-brite's the finish. He does this with most all his customs. I wonder if I've got nothing to lose I might give it a go with the pipes where shown, buffing in straight lines carefully so not to cut all the way past the top chrome into copper or nickel. Just a 'buffed' finish look. hmmmm Dang tempting. Having said that, I'll bet the chrome as is looks great. Some DIY heresy fun.

J_Undisputed, Sounds like you do have a debacle with the Big Slash for going that route. As these I picked up have no shields, I assume they're just conventional pipe-clamp types that came off easily with nothing but staggered pipe left.

I figure I'll wrap them up to the last stagger point. Hoping they'll look good. We shall see. I'll know before I get them on I guess what the finished goods will look like.

Pipes came in.. Chrome looks great however, I feel the need to make 'em mine. Found a cool article on the topic:

Did RPW add O2's to pipes post Ness versions?
These have NO ports which makes me think possibly they had different revisions of the 06-up versions of The Slash or Slash-Ness. Answers the question about running O2's.. "Screw 'em". Running a VFC III anyway.

Just a couple teaser pics. Now to pull the stock exhaust and actually verify fitment as these are unused but private sale on shoestring budget. We "believe" these should fit.. Famous last words huh.

Cindy at RPW, who's super helpful by the way, believes they are previous to a change to the 06-up version when they began adding the O2 ports, so at one time they came without.. I guess prior to the closed loop bikes. The plot thickens.

Oh, well.... You don't need the o2 sensors anyway. Mine, are unplugged, and the bike runs better that way.

Since I finally got around to ordering the VFC III with exhaust gaskets, I'm tearing down to verify exhaust beginning tonight if I get 10 spare minutes, so I can verify the fitment of these used pipes.

Once the all-good bell rings with that, it's scotch-brite time (I'll speak with an accent ala Russell Mitchell).

Also I get the joyous experience you guys have had in getting to those injector plugs from under the air-box. I'm seriously not looking forward to that bit of business, from all I've read.

Yes HC, I wish I could just cut the crappy stock air-box out and slap in some torque tubes. Ain't happenin' unless a chunk of cash drops from the sky. Hey.. It could happen.


Question...
I was thinking, after the O2 sensors with their pigtails are disconnected, what to do with the connectors and wiring? Maybe some shrink-tubing over the plugs just to protect them then wire-tie them down? What do you guys do with the wiring for the O2 plugs if you're not using the sensors?

FINALLY some progress on this little project. She's no longer a factory virgin. So far I've got all my parts, and pulled the stock pipes tonight. What an absolute bitch!! Bring a rubber mallet for that job! Confirmed fitment of the private sale slashness pipes. Ready to scotch-brite, wrap and install.

Then VFC III install. Cut frame. Install smokin looking wrapped and brushed RPW Slash. Crank. Catch a woodie and watch the wrap bake in, smoking like crazy during cure time.

Not to forget wire tying up the dangling O2 plugs. HC put it best. Friends don't let friends ride closed loop.


Since we're picking up this little crumb-crusher tomorrow I won't get much wrenching time in I fear.
