Default Possible Fuel Issue(s)

I have a 2014 Cross Country 8-Ball that I picked up in January. Since the weather has been weird around here I haven't had many chances to ride. I just 500 miles and have filled up the tank 3 times so far.

Well this Monday I stopped and filled up, put in 4.21 gallons and could see the gas in the tank just below the neck so I know it was full. I've been watching my trip odometer and MPG estimator just for giggles. According to the estimator I am getting between 47 and 53mpg, and my odometer is reading 107 miles since last fill up. My fuel gauge is showing just above empty, so I'm a little confused.

The other thing I have noticed since Monday is that once I get home and park her in the garage there is a STRONG gas smell. If I go back out into the garage an hour later the garage smells like I left a gas can open somewhere. I don't see any leaks on the floor of the garage so there doesn't seem to be a leak or at least not a big enough one to leave a trail.

Any ideas?

Do not believe your gage its giving you a easement of what your mileage is. Use your phone. Vic gages are not the best for telling you miles per gallon.

Check your gas cap to see if its sealing tight. You should see by looking at your rubber gasket a shinny seal mark all the way around. Look at the lip on the tank is it bent it should be flat all the way around.

before tearing into anything, top off your tank to the brim some evening and check it in the AM, if its down, you know you have a problem with the bike. if its not, well then idk

Well I got home this evening, at 148 miles the fuel light came on and the Low Fuel Idiot Light is on. My garage smells like gas but again no puddles.

VJ, I looked at the inside lip and its flat as you stated, the cap seales well and is flush with the cap ring.

I'm going to fill up in the morning and then take the car to work that way I can verify the fuel level once I get home tomorrow.

We'll see what happens.

Your bike is under warranty so take it to the dealer and let them look at it. If your dealer is not that good at working on Vics then take it to another dealer.

The fuel gauge on my XR is a filthy liar. When I do the math, I average between 42-45 mpg, but I hit "empty" and my light comes on with 2 gallons still in the tank, a little more sometimes. I use it more to gauge when I need to start checking my trip meter than any accurate indicator of how much fuel I have left.
