I have a 2008 Vegas & a 2011 XR. I quickly noticed there is a difference in gearing. I prefer the taller gearing of my Vegas. Can I put a Vegas pulley on my XR to make them geared the same? By the way I ride solo without my saddlebags full of gear. I know the XR is heavier, but I can choose the right gear for my speed and load. Also, I hope to improve my MPG on the highway. Am I right about changing the rear pulley?
I feel stupid for not finding out sooner, but my two bikes have different size wheels and tires. My Vegas has an overall diameter rear tire of 26.25". The XR is 24.39". I found this information on Dunlop's website. I also measured the rear pulley; they are the same. I found a front pulley from Turbotec. It seems to me that it would help me get the results I'm looking for. I hope this helps other members.
My Vegas is a six speed like the XR. From what I can tell the pulleys and the transmissions are the same. I do see your point about the speedometer being off. The "overdrive" pulley has 32 teeth compared to the stock 30 teeth pulley. I'm not sure but, I think its 6.25 percent difference. If that is right then at 60 mph my speedometer will read 52.5 mph. I plan to wait until I need to replace the rear tire. Until then I can think of what to do. Thanks for your input.
