Default More power.....good & bad.

Installed the VFC3 a few weeks ago. Very happy with the power increase. Also have got a few other goodies, timing wheel-advance, Lloydz air filter, exhaust. So all this adds more power, which I really enjoy. Trade off fuel mileage goes down when the right hand is twisting it harder, but if I ride it normal it is ok. The other thing I had happen last night first time, clutch slippage. Yes I am running pure synthetic oil, which in the desert heat I really prefer to the blend. I do have free play in the lever as the manual says. Last night I had one of the older grandsons on back. May be the last time he goes with me, he is heavier than I am,which makes the bike quite a hand full. Anyhow we were getting on a on ramp to the freeway going up hill and I was gassing it pretty good, but not wide up and then the fricken clutch slipped like three times. Never had it happen on this bike before. I was a little disappointed only got 17K on the bike. Never had a bike slip the clutch with this low of miles..... the flip side to this the bike is making a more power than stock, so I am happy about that. The bad thing is if gets worse I may be buying a new clutch, maybe a Barnett. The other bad thing I think the time for the grandson riding on the back is over, he will be disappointed. He is 14, but but a big kid, so it will give him a goal to start saving for his own bike which is a good thing.

You know you can only adjust your clutch when its over night cold.
No you can't adjust it when its warm or hot.

Well, how big an 'ol boy er ya?

I feel your pain. Grandson grew up on the back of mine. He's 19 now, and his riding days are pretty much over. Kind of sad, but the Air Force will be occupying his time soon. Any day in fact.

Clutches come and go, well the fact is I have never worn one on a bike. The Vic worries me some because of the full engagement being at the end of the lever travel. Hope you get it worked out.

Default clutch not oil

using a motorcycle rated synthetic oil will not cause slippage in itself! been running Amsoil a real synthetic in several bikes with no issues. my other bike a 2012 bonneville, users adding xtra power install an uprated spring kit, a cheap fix + easy install on it. new to Vics so i am still learning. i would check adjustment first, and possibly a different oil, you dont say what you use but i have seen charts on coefficient of friction on motorcycle oils, some being better than others. many times a product is in spec on the lowest end + not near as good as one in the top end, both advertised in spec! a search will give you more info!

So let me get this right.
OP posts happiness with recent tweaks and is sure he is seeing increased power. He accepts fuel penalty but now has clutch slippage to contend with.

His response is the that if he stops carrying passenger maybe he can delay putting Barnett's in. This is about the same time he mentions that he prefers full syn oil which is seconded by another responder who assures him that full syn is fine.
Is that about right? Have I got the gist of it?

Because the funny thing is I am a fairly big boy and our mileage is not too far apart and I have similar mods. I punish my machine every time I push the button and that includes how and when I shift. Yet, no clutch slip. One place where we differ is that I use oil that meets specification. I'm not saying other factors may not be contributory, but before I went through a bunch of parts swapping or changed how or who I ride with, I would probably compromise my personal preferences and try using lubricants that satisfy manufacturer requirements to see if maybe Victory were not just blowing smoke up my skirt. Seems a logical step now that the issue has revealed itself in the wake of power mods and the added weight of a passenger, neither of which would I expect to cause slip.But that's just me.
I would adjust the clutch per manual after an oil change to specified oil. I would probably give it a period of time to show improvement or deterioration and then consider what to do next. I might go with Barnett's too but in a basically stock mill Barnett's are more peace of mind than a necessary improvement.

Default Amsoil 10w-40

I have ran Mobil 1 in bikes before. Also have used Amsoil both the 20w-50 and 10w-40. Yes currently running the Amsoil 10w-40. I know they recommend the semi-synthetic. Yes I may try running that instead and see what happens. Kind of ticked me off it happened, mo money, mo money running through my thick skull, did actually think of swapping out the oil right after that. First time it ever happened on this bike. Never tried to pull the front wheel off the ground with this bike from a stop or never done a burn out holding the front brake, nothing I would consider abusive. Figured with the grandson & myself we had 390 lbs plus a few items in the bags, so say 410 lbs or so. Going up a fairly step on ramp and I did not have it WOT but it did seem to happen around 4000+ rpm. It slipped in and out , sorta like somebody fanning the clutch quickly. It does have free play with the engine cold and hot. My Triump never slipped and it was suppose to have a week clutch, also ran the Amsoil, but Triumph also "recommends" a full synthetic motorcyle oil. Time will tell. May have to go back to using the Delo, oh no I problably just started another freakin oil thread, ha,ha. Thanks for the comments/advise people.

So how much free play. Go back to Vic oil and in 500 miles it might not slip. What other oils did you try

SB, these guys just want you to be the Professor of oil study's for the site.
Cheaper to pull it apart and investigate than change oil back and forth. Not that big a deal to have a look and know for sure.

I have to grow old but I don't have to grow UP.thumb up. 2010 Jackpot.

I usually don't get involved with Oil things .. Will just say I have 27,000 Miles on my XC used Vic Oil from Day 1 and run it like a screaming banshee.. No clutch problems ever .. Until see a need or reason to try a different oil will just stick with what has been tried and true ..

Default full synthetic or real synthetic

today we must differentiate, real synthetic group IV + V are just that real man made lubricants in a lab that can control its properties, they meet + surpass any specs required by OE's. other " synthetics" are group III dino oils with inferior to group IV + V properties. its hard to tell, as oil producers call formulations "propriety" i call bull! usually normal mechanical wear issues as well as the riders riding habits cause issues. petroleum oils are more likely to cause varnish + glaze because they tolerate less heat + breakdown. Amsoil 10-40 meets the highest level of friction for wet clutches JASO MA2, amsoil leads others follow!!
