I finally just took the plunge and replaced the tps after checking the one on the bike with an ohm meter. The test showed that there were slight drop offs in ohms thru out the low and mid throttle range and especially just on throttle tip in where my issue was. I fought with the screws holding the tps on since I had no ball allens. I found it easier to drill a hole right threw the air box in line with the top screw, this made removal and install a cinch for that one. Just glued the holes over when done. The other I modified a screw driver to remove the screw once it was loose. That one was a bitch to tighten on install. To fully tighten this one I inserted the long end of the allen and turned it with xtra long needle nose pliers. I also bought new screws at Home Depot. They had a slightly deeper head and took one size larger allen wrench which I am sure helped.
I was concerned that I would have to do a recal for the tps for the bike to run right but other than having to reset the idle that was it. I did do the throttle reset procedure too.I went for just a short ride and my popping issues and flat spot appear to be gone. I can no longer make the bike pop as before. .. And yes, the tps is the same for the 04 as the ones indicated in internet posts for different year bikes. I used the Auto Zone tps140. $34 and my time ..problem solved without paying a dealer for diagnostic test that I am sure would have showed nothing and then them trying to sell me some other fix.
