Default Windshield Brackets too big

Saw a used Victory windshield with quick disconnect clamps on craigslist yesterday while I was visiting my parents and decided to chance fitment and pick it up (could not pass up the price). Guy could not give me part numbers or anything so I could not look it up.. said he had it mounted to his Harley and that it was a Victory part that he bought off of someone else.

When I finally got home I could see that the brackets were for the models with the much larger diameter forks. Would it be OK to put some thick rubber tubing around the forks to take up the slack or should I be looking to buy the proper brackets for it?
