Default Which Spark Plug?

Been doing basic maintanence on my newly acquired 2002 V92TC. I went to the dealer to get spark plugs (among other high priced things) and he gave me NGK CPR6EA-9 plugs. But when I got ready to put them in, I saw the sticker on the frame that said the correct plug was the NGK CR7EB. So I looked in the owners manual -- it agreed with the sticker. Digging thru the shop manual (that was so kindly available for download thru links on this forum () ) it showed the the '7' plug was correct and that the '6' was used from 2004 and later.

Searched thru the NGK website -- the '6' and '7' in the part numbers refer to the heat range of the plugs. A '6' plug is hotter than a '7' plug.

Since it was a weekend and the dealer is closed on Monday, a quick call to the local O'Reilly's had a pair of the correct NGK plugs in the store at 7:00 am the following morning (for about 2/3 the price).

Today I stopped back by the dealer to return or at least swap for the correct plugs. He checks the computer and says that the '6' plug has superceded the '7' plug in their system.

So which is the right plug? Were the originally specified plugs too cold and this is an improvement? -OR- Is Victory just reducing their inventory SKU's at the expense of owners of a few "old" bikes? -OR- Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill over something that really isn't big enough to make any difference?

I can keep an eye on the plug color and see if they foul from running too cold. I guess my concern is that if you have an engine that already runs high octane to prevent detonation knocking, a plug that is too hot would make that problem worse.

Any words of wisdom?

I went through the same scenario. The original plug was replaced by the one the dealer gave you. I was a bit worried because the new one is about 1/8" longer too, but a long time Victory dealer said that the swtich was made many years ago and if there had been any problems they would have presented their ugly head by now.

I have the new plugs in and don't notice any difference at all. My 2003 had never had the original plugs replaced since I bought it last summer with only 87 miles on it. But it was missing so that's why I replaced them. Turns out it was a loose spark plug wire causing my problems.

Congrats on your new purchase MH1 and welcome to the forums. I don't recall seeing a pick of your new ride, if you havent posted it in the V92 TC thread under the V92 forum.

My take is what the dealer has in his computer is going to be the latest from Ma. Maintenane instruction manuals will always have the flaw of not getting an update or someone that was supposed to validate it, missed it and it is not cost effective to correct. The -6 being hotter makes perfect sense allowing better use of 89 octane fuel (as discussed in another thread that almost got drawn out) over the 91/92 which is going to provide better engine performance on down the road.

As I understand the Freedom engine, one of Ma Vics selling points was keeping things simple such as the freedom V92. If you were speaking of the previous generation engine (01 and back), that could be a whole differnt story I would think but since your 2002 and my 2004 are the same basic powerplant, I can understand why the dealer has it as a superseded. As for the plugs costing 1/3 less at the Auto parts, I just chock it up to working with my dealer and keeping my Vic business in house. I pick up plugs when I am there for something else so I didnt spend the gas going to the auto store... lol.. Of course, I like my local dealership, good group of guys and it usually comes out in the wash. Now if pricing was 30% on something much larger, battery or something I would ask him for a better price.

On a side note, about using 91 Octane (as I said, I stumbled on that discussion qouting something from the owners manual as well and wound up getting educated a bit) I think you will be quite impressed switching to 89 as well as your engine performing better with less carbon build up. I picked up about 4 MPG on the last two tanks and I have not been that lean on the right wrist either. No pinging, just flat better performance. Our temps up here around high 80s to mid 90s. Of course if you started pinging, go back to the 91/92.

Yes, I have also been watching the discussion about octane. The cooler plug might help keep the 89 octane from knocking.

BTW, there is a picture of my new ride in the thread titled "New member in the family".

mh1 , I run the NGK CPR6EB-9 in my 2005 TC. I have no problems with the plug and they run clean, because I change them every year I inspect them and they are not fouled or blackened. I buy them from NAPA because there hasn't been a victory dealer around for a while. Also I run high octane fuel as Victory recommends 92 octane minimum. But, recently a Triumph dealer picked up the Victory line in Akron,NY The place is called Bucks Motor sports I hope to use their expertise if I need it . I am glad we have more Victory presence in this area we need it. Good luck with your ride. Mike
