Default Questions,I have done my searching so not super generic stuff

So I just bought a 2000 v92c. I am aware of the transmission issues and that it is HIGHLY recommended to get one with a 2003+ transmission.

Upon pulling the recall information I was able to find out that the bike was brought to the dealership in july of 2003 for a tranny issue involve something bent inside. The repairs were done for free even though it was outside of warranty. On visual inspection the speed sensor is "looking" at the front pulley (not sure if right word) for the belt which I read was the easiest way to check if the tranny was most likely 2003+. Would it be possible for someone to link (trust me I have looked my hardest via search) some pictures of what both the 2003 and older speed sensor look like/location just so I can be sure I am not confusing something.

The bike has also been hit with the "reset" odometer. It shows 4400 miles however I was told that the actual mileage is around 22,000. Is there anything that I can/should do to avoid the odometer being reset again? I don't plan on selling the bike anytime soon, but would like to keep things as operational as possible.

Finally, anyone near Austin TX? Maybe we could meet up for a beer or something and you could tell me about things you have learned over time about your V92.

Welcome Saylin and congrats on your purchase. Will try to help ya on a couple your questions.

Owners manual. create an account on Vic website under service/support and download your digital owners manual. That will help, do a search on service manuals here... Someone posted a thread not long ago for digitals... I didnt look but its a shot. Heres Vics link http://www.polaris.com/en-us/Company...s-Manuals.aspx You can look up the parts index there and has some decent pics as well.

Tranny recall: Im not real familar with it, theres a quite a few 99-02 owners here so I am sure someone will post to help ya. I know on the 03-> V92 looking at the pulley the speed sensor is about the 10 o'clock position. Not sure that is going to help ya. I do know its not cost feasable to do it yourself and that if it blows that you can install a used V92 Freedom for about the same costs or at least thats the recommendations I seen here. I know the freedom engine resolved several issues over the hammer engine which of course it would.

Speedo reset: The older speedos had a memory bat that eventually fails or the solder breaks as I understood that is the culprit. What can you do? Install a battery tender and ensure you don't let your batter drain to dead. From what I seen it was draining the battery, not disconnecting it that can cause the reset. You cand disconnect and reconnect with no issue. Howerver, I do remember one post stating it just reset so there you go. Keeping your batt terminals clean and tight is VERY important on your model, the bike does NOT like flakey power at all.

Don't forget to post some pics of your ride, update your signature with bike model and yr for us to quick reference and take advantage of the forums. Lots of folks here with plenty of knowledge to share!!!! Welcome and safe riding!!!

Oh I forgot about the beer. Long time ago lived in Lubbock but never made it back after the Navy... Will have to take a rain check until I visit family again one day.. lol..

What Ive learned over time about Vic... Change the oil faithfully (I do 3500 no more than 4k) and open up that air box / exhaust to release some of the power in that engine.. You will be suprised if your still running stock air... lol...

It is difficult to tell 100% because the motor shown in the thread is out of the bike and obviously the one I looked at was assembled :P.

Glad to see another Navy Vet on here. I was only able to serve for 4 years before being medically discharged, but wish I could of stayed.

I will definitely heed your advice about oil changes...even with the giant 6 quart capacity lol.

Welcome to the elite group of V92C owners!

From what you've posted, it does indeed appear that you have the updated tranny... Another giveaway is the gearing in first gear - if you can get across an intersection before having to shift into second, you probably have the upgrade; on the original tranny, first gear was an extremely low (think "stump-puller") gear ratio...

I'm a XR rider and i don't know much about V92s, but I live in Pflugerville and would love to grab a beer sometime.

I haven't seen many Victories in the Austin area. Saw a guy the other day on a red XCT though.

And the problems start....

Bike arrived today and excited I took it out for my first ride. Good thing I stayed local because after about a mile on the road it stalled pulling up to a stop sign.

Not sure if it is normal but with the key in the "on" position and the bike not running "CH ENG" was flashing on the gauge. I was able to get the bike to start with some throttle but with the throttle in the same position it would run up to 3k RPM (very little throttle) and then fall to around 1k and stumble for a second then run back up to 3k RPM.

For the transmission speed in first gear, 20 MPH was achieved at about 3k rpm. It did not feel like a granny gear but it was short feeling to me (coming from a sport bike). Does this seem like a 2003+ transmission?

I called the dealership and they are on their way back out to take the bike back and figure out what is wrong with it. Wondering if I should just tell them to keep it.....

3k rpm @ 20 mph sounds about right for the '03 tranny...

"Chk Eng" flashing with key on, engine off is normal.

As to stumbling issues... Could be a number of things; I'd probably start with battery & system voltage checks. The ECU on the early bikes gets REALLY disagreeable at low voltage, causing rough running, backfiring, low power, etc.

I can't say to the '00 bikes, but the '99s came with a low-output alternator (23 amp, IIRC) which wouldn't start charging until about 2k rpm; upgrading to the later 38 amp one is highly recommended. A quick visual check is to look at the regulator - the 38 amp one has rounded corners (about the same radius as a US quarter), while the 23 amp one is smaller, with square corners. (You'll find it beneath the starter, at the bottom front of the engine.)

Another cause may be the throttle body adapter; essentially, it's the intake manifold, lives between the throttle body & the cylinder heads. It's a semi-rigid rubber item, and can develop cracks over time which let in unmetered air - thus screwing up the a/f ratio.

If you don't mind telling us, what dealer are you working with?

The dealer is Kent power sports of austin (actually located in kyle)

They sent the guy who dropped it off right back out to pick it up and take it in to be fixed at no charge to me. He was able to get it running with about 1/2 choke and a hard blip on throttle on start.

He said it was still running a bit rough and he brought it back to the dealer to be fixed. They are going to start diagnosing ASAP and get it right back out to me, so far they seem like pretty good people. I was told they will call and let me know if they find a problem before fixing it.

Happy to hear that sounds like an 03 transmission, was the biggest thing I was worried about :P
