Default 04 TC, converting to a Harley drive belt and rear sprocket?

I read a post where a guy replaced the drive belt and rear sprocket with one from a sportster I believe. Anyone know anything about doing this? My 04 TC keeps snapping belts after about 20.000 miles, I'm on my third belt and coming up on 80,000 miles so I'm getting ready for it. I don't know what the deal is with the belts, I have a 05 Vegas that doesn't have this issue so I don't think it's me. I've ran the belts at spec and as loose as I could get away with and still they break right at the 20,000 mile mark.

No mate ... The Under Drive Pulleys on Jackpot need a HD belt coz it is shorter, BUT the HD belt is LESS quality then the VIC belt, trust me I know ....

You are on your third belt ?? Whouw .... I think these belts are indistucteble .... Must be a line-up problem or rear pulley problem or something else ??

under drive pulley you use a Buel belt. Don't believe you use the rear pulley.
If your belt it is braking at 20K I'm guessing your running the belt to tight. The belt has to be adjusted when its cold. It will become tight when it gets hot.
With wheel off ground you should have 1/2" un and down play in several spots.

Half Crazy is the buy that knows about under drive pulley and belt

Default belt to chain conversion

Well, I am the guy that converted to a chain.

It took a LOT of machine work. I bought a Harley sprocket and machined the middle out of it. I then took the stock front Vic sprocket and machined the outside down so that all I had left was the splines in the hub. The first one I welded, which failed due to the heat treating process of the sprockets. The next one I made a bolt together unit with shear pins.

I agree with other posters. Chain drive doesn't sound like solution for you. Have you checked alignment, sharp edges that belt could be rubbing on when suspension moves? Feel the sprockets and check for sharp edges.

I loaded some pics of the chain conversion process. Also, I bought a blank rear sprocket, which I machined to fit bolt pattern of rear wheel.

Default Maii Drive Belt Specs

this reply doesn't directly relate to your issue, but seeing your responses, I thought one of you might be able to tell me the width and teeth specs of my 05 92TC. I know the part number but no Vic dealer can seem to give me the specs. Dealer maintenance guys have even looked it up on the Tech Manual and can't find it. Thanks

A loose belt is actually more likely to break as the teeth will try and ride up & over the sprockets making them super tight repeatedly & cause the belt to fail-to tight's not great either but it's a constant force rather than the tension spikes that a to loose belt will experience in it's shortened life. It takes some fiddling around to find the belts happy spot but i don't see going to a different brand belt/sprockets as being an upgrade.

rear sprocket is 64 tooth front drive sprocket is 30 tooth
the belt width 28mm
could not find any place that gave a good belt teeth count.
Did find one place that said 135 teeth but I'm not sure

Mine broke at about 7500 miles. I've been told that is unusual. I have about 13000 on the new belt. I just got new tires, with the cool $50. Dunlop rebate, and the shop didn't see any problems with the belt.
