Default Engine miss...

First off, thank you for allowing me the pleasure of being part of your group!

My Bro in Law has a '99 V92. After riding for 15-20 mins, the engine has a bad miss. He's had it to two dealers, both saying it's the ECM. He's sceptical and so am I. I work in auto repair for 40 years. I have yet to see an ECM cause 1 cylinder to miss.

What do you guys think? Is it possible? I'm thinking coil, plug wire, bad/cracked plug.

I don't want him spending $750-1000 on an ECM if he doesn't need it.

Thanks for listenening!

clean the throttle body's first off
How old is the battery even check terminals to see cables are tight.
Yes do a continuity test on plug wires. If you need them makes some Vic gets a arm and leg for them. If your bike has long wires make sure you make long wires.
Check coil for battery voltage guess check all over for a power wire that might be shorting out.

These are great bikes. Rode mine home 70 miles with it having a miss and found out head light was way off (coon hunting) by the time we got it home. Mine ended up being a bad battery, but definetly clean the throttle bodies. These old girls need a little TLC from time to time. Hate to say it but it could be a fuel pump going bad too. Watch on Ebay, there are ECM's on there from time to time.

Hey all!

One month later and problem still exists. Battery checked ok, TB cleaned. The dealer said a MAP sensor was bad, they replaced that...same problem.

Talking with another guy, he said these bikes have serious problems with the TPS. Any thoughts on that? Other than lifting the tank, it looks to be a simple project.

He also gave me some story about "computer relearn" for the TPS. Is this true? In the automotive repair world, of which I'm a part of, We never do that.

Thanks for any input!

You being in the auto world you know you can buy a TPS at the auto store
Call this shop and tell them all. Make a list before you call so you don't for get something.
