Default V92TC hardbag TS and running light

Seen a few thoughts and ideas on using the bags TS as running lights so went a looking at mine. Found I have dual filliment bulbs in both rear turn signal with 3 wire bulb socket assemblies with the dim socket having a temp plug (which I can remove) installed so that it is currently wired with a ground and Left or Right signal hot.

I was curious if anyone has ran the 3rd wire to the running light from the brake light or further up providing a constant dim yellow for rear running. Looking forward to your feedback.

Well I was hoping someone else had done this so as to not go the guinea pig route but only got a lot of views and no input so…. Here is what I have found and am about to attempt. Will post pre and post pics with light illuminated so you can be the judge.

I did not have very good luck finding red replacement lens and after thinking about it and seeing examples of the use of translucent paint on yellow lens, I think I want to keep the yellow appearance while bulb is not lit. Should this not work, will go with the TRANSPARENT red paint found at the link I included for lens paint. I will be removing both rear signals lens and painting the inside with RED TRANSLUCENT paint, 2 coats not 3 according to most DIY posts I found. This is not to be confused with transparent from what I read as the TRANSLUCENT will filter all but red from white bulbs giving a red indication. It was about 50/50 from those that I found that have done this using the modelers version found at your arts/crafts store for 4.00 or the 25.00 can found online. I figure I will try 4.00 can first and if it sucks I can replace both lens for under 25.00 and chock it up to lessons learned.

I will still be using a dual filament white bulb unless the lens has the yellow tint to it and in that case I found some red dual filaments’ to pop in. I am in the process of running/pinning the dim 2nd filament in my signal housings and believe I will tap both of those into the front turn signal running lights so that the running light will extinguish when the turn signal is turned on. I will be painting the lens first just to make sure red it solid before wiring in the running lights so I stay legal.

Hopefully, this project will come in under $15.00 and have the desired look.

Here is the link to a red paint which also has some smoke that seems to be pretty tight should you be interested. http://www.gadgetjq.com/tl_paint.htm and it also has some stuff for repairing your cage head lights if their dulled like mine just in case your interested.

Thanks Rick, will look at that as the backup if the T-Paint goes bad. Figure I have nothing to loose but if it does work I get to keep the yellow contrast on the red bags when not lit...

I think that the red replacement lens is still available from Vic - they were on the '00 or '01 SC bikes; I bought a pair about 9 months ago to fit to my bike. Don't have the part numbers handy, though...

Some have also fit the '59 Cadillac "bullet" lenses to their TC - looks pretty nice, especially with the "retro" look of the bike.

Thanks Colorado, may look into the bullet lens as I bought the bike because of it's retro look so... makes sense as I continue to add accys. If you ever get a chance to post a shot of that would be great to see!

Update on the paint: Yup, it works. It did darken the orange to a redish orange which makes sense since it is allowing light through the lens but it is not the stock color red. Checked with the flashers on and wow, looks almost as red as my tail light and that is keeping the dual filliment white bulb installed. I did have a little problem with orange peel during the second coat. I may have sprayed a little too much during that application but it smoothed out. 3 coats overal on inside of lens only and perfect red. Total cost? under 5.00 with tax for one small can of translucent red paint. Will post pictures once I wire up the running lights if anyone interested. Thanks for the feedback prior to this.

Hey Tim,
Did you get this project completed? It was something I was going to try to do to my TC over the winter and haven't got around to it yet. I was planning on buying the red lenses from the SC until I just read your post about painting the lenses. Let us know how it turned out.

Well Jerry, I kept saying when it gets cold enough or snows I will finish it but only got into mid 20's a few times and never did get snow. Im out on travel for a few weeks and as soon as I get back will take pictures of the lens I painted. Cheap fix, looks pretty good (not OEM) but I like how it is not pure red, kinda tinted looking but when they light up their red as can be. Haven't done the wiring for the running though... :-( My bags are red so the yellow stood out bad, I like the blend now. Thanks for the caddy light link! Not sure I am going that route but still thinking hehe Post Pics coming soon. Tim

I did find the part number for the 2000 SC red lenses. It is 2201592. Problem is they are discontinued by Polaris. I've called and searched around but can't find anybody that has them. I may end up doing the cheap fix paint until I can find red lenses.

I completely forgot to get pics of the red rear turn signals so here you go and again I apologize. Flashers off, on and a close up of the signal lens. Its more of an orange color. Im sure one of these days I will pick up a set of red lens but the HDs don't accept the chrome ring I am told and really the old SC is about the best way to go if you can find them used maybe. Good luck! I still haven't hardwired in my running lights yet either... lol, it never turned to winter!
