Some motorcycles with great big flywheels and big gears, like many Harleys and some BMW Boxers, need the clutch Ė or at least a little clutch Ė for nearly every shift. Most sportbikes only need you to use the clutch to pull away from stops and for the shift from first to second gear.

At slow, around-town speeds, we mostly use at least a little clutch to shift anyway; you donít need to pull the lever all the way in every time you use it. But if youíre steadily accelerating, and especially at WOT (wide open throttle), youíll find that after second gear, if you roll the throttle closed just enough to unload the driveline, for just a split second, with your toe pressing on the lever, then third gear will slip right in without using the clutch at all. Fourth, 5th and 6th will slip in even easier since the gaps between them are increasingly smaller. Done smoothly, itís no harder on your gearbox than using the clutch.

Hand shift kits for those with no left leg basically use the ignition to kill power for a split second to unload the drive train allowing the shift to take place.

Don't motorcycle dragracers use some sort of pneumatic powered shifting to speed their shifts and to force shifting without having to unload and reload the engine - thus yielding faster times?

Kills the engine for a millisecond to snick the next gear home.
I believe theres an option from Dynojet that works in with your power commander.
But Ive decided to retire from drag racing with a best of [email protected] in the interests of my bike lasting me.

For now anyway....Ive been known to change my mind��

Thank you much. It is really awesome to have so much diversity of knowledge here on the Victory Forums. I had no idea that these pneumatic shifters killed the engine for an instant. I thought they just used brute force and were probably a big contributor to transmission problems. Now I find out they are far more subtle than that. Thanks, again.
