Default Big improvement week!

On the board this week: New tires front and back (Avons), install eBay sourced chrome heat shields for my heavily discolored slash exhaust, clean the Arlen Ness big sucker air filter, clean the throttle body, new plugs, check wires, new drive belt, and have the fast idle cable replaced, and hopefully the acceleration stumble I feel at 1500 rpm cleaned up. This all was quoted to me by the local Victory dealer at over 2 K....I ended up with a counter offer of 890 $, and a 2 day turn around by a local bike shop that did magic on my custom Shadow recently.

Question: my bike has the Victory Ness slash exhaust, but I was told by the previous owner that the bike had never been flashed/tuned for this exhaust and intake mod. Bike ran ok, but I think could be better/smoother.
Victory dealer told me something that I thought was highly "suspect"...he said that the exhaust was sold with a " card" that was required to re-calibrate/flash the ECM.And if I didn't have this card, they would charge me 300 $ for a replacement, and, ( the part that I had the most doubt about) he said the "ECM could only be accessed/flashed o-n-c-e....something I find highly doubtful and dubious. So...anyone in the same boat? Similar problems? I'm basically just trying to get this thing back to the minimum operating condition that it should be in, taking into consideration that the previous owner did NOTHING to it. All relevant tips n info mucho appreciated! Thanks!

I didn't see where you said what year or model your bike is.
Before you waist your money on the dealer's BS call or send Rylan a email. He's a great guy and you'll get all the correct answers and the most for your money/

Mostly true, although typically the Victory calibration cards are closer to $150, so they must be throwing two hours of labor on top of that. The whole process shouldn't take more than an hour, tops, which should include calibrating your TPS after the calibration upload.

Essentially, the "card", is simply a piece of paper with a unique number on it that entitles you to the ECU map download, and it is a one use deal. Once you use it, yes, that's it for that calibration card. However, the ECM can be flashed as many times as your like, either buy purchasing another card, or asking to have the stock download put back. The "stock" calibration is a no charge deal, outside of labor. But the various stage calibrations must be purchased.

A lot of folks go with an aftermarket fuel tuner instead of the Stage 1 calibration, to provide more fuel. However, IMO, if you have a specific set of mods, that a specific stage 1 calibration is applicable to, you will get the best performance that way. And yes, the Ness pipes came with the calibration card as part of the price of the pipes. It should have been uploaded to the ECM when the pipes were installed, unless whoever sold the pipes to begin with, decided to abscond with the card and use it or sell it elsewhere.

Wow! Ok, good and actionable Intel here, thanks. Ok, I've seen the stage ones and various power commanders etc online, which one is best ? Accessing that ECU, is this something my local independent bike shop is able to do, or am I forced to go to the local ( known for outrageous prices and shenanigans) Victory dealer and show up with my pants down around my ankles?
