Default XM radio antenna location

I have a 2011 Victory Cross Country and had a factory XM radio installed in it last summer. I've noticed however that the signal seems to cut out more than I would like. I know that satellite radios do this when there obstructions close by but this thing cuts out when I go by a grove of trees that may be 100 yards away. I'm wondering if it would be better to move the antenna outside of the fairing and mount it maybe on the brake reservoir or somewhere that has a clear shot to the sky. Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a good solution?
I've had other XM radios on bikes (externally mounted) that have had not had this issue.
Any advice would be appreciated.
