Default New Highball - trying to find new cam chain tensioners

Hey everyone! After pining over the highball for many years, I am finally a proud owner as of a few weeks ago. It's a 2012 with 8k miles. So far the only thing I've done is a 2-1 exhaust and a windshield (I know, I know, a windshield is a violation of the spirit of the bobber look. But I discovered as I'm getting older my eyes cant handle the wind at all). Anyway, there is a rattling noise on my bike that I've read about over and over about in this forum that relates to the cam chain tensioners. So, what I'd like to do is buy them before I check them on my bike. I figure if I check them and they're good then I'll just put the new ones away for later since it sounds like it will need to be replaced at some point anyway. But, I cant figure out where to buy them or even what the part number is. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance, I could tell while reading all of the threads before I joined that this is a supportive community, and I'm grateful for this resource.

I think you misunderstood. The cam tensioners don't go bad on these like they do on the Harley's.

What you may be thinking of that can make noise as they wear and wafer springs get weaker is the 'torque compensator'. Sometimes the older Vic's (pre-2013) had that noise when brand new. Kind of a chucka-chucka sound.

BBob, The noise is coming from the right side not the left. I've found many threads on this forum about cam chain tensioners. Also, a few days ago I stopped by a dealer used to sell Victory's and still services them, he also talked about the noise being the cam chain tensioner mentioning the issue is common. He also took a quick listen to my bike and said the audible sound doesn't sound egregious.

Now, what do I know about service department dealers? They aren't always right, also doing as little as possible for the customer seems to be an ongoing theme in the threads I've read in this forum and many others. All dealers are definitely not created equally.

So, I found a site to order cam chain tensioners, got them on order. When they get here I'm going to check them out anyway. Cheap, easy and quick to check and I'm out virtually nothing.

But also BBob, after you mentioned the torque compensator I dove into the material in this forum about that and you're right, that's definitely something I'll have to pay attention to since it is so common. Is there a youtube clip on this that you know of, both for diagnosis and the actual fix? I'd like to add this to my future reference material.

You can isolate which which cylinder is giving you trouble by listening at the cam case/rocker box with a screwdriver to each and comparing, Your looking for the loudest thrashing sound.
You can then swap just the tensioners and see if the noise moves to the other cylinder. That will tell you if it is your tensioners.

If you mark the caps with a paint pen with a line onto the cylinder you can retighten the tensioner caps to that line and they will be close to the correct torque.
You may have to remove the rear pipe to get that tensioner assembly out.
You may have to heat the caps (PLUG-TENSIONER) with a heat gun or in a hot (clean) oil bath to expand them enough to get the tensioners out. The caps (PLUG-TENSIONER) are not the same the tensioners are. Do everything you can think of to insure the motor does not rotate while the tensioners are removed. It can be very bad if it does.
Be sure the rubber damper (SLEEVE-DAMPER,CAM DRIVE) stays in the correct cylinder.

will be interested to see if both plungers are working. If you had o-rings you could pull them now and check them

Again if any of you guys know of a good YouTube clip on the torque compensator (diagnosis and fix) Iíd appreciate it. Iíd like to study up on as many potential future problems as possible with my new child. Also, if you guys can think of any other typical issues to look out for in the future Iím all ears.

Polaris made a change in wafer spring tension to quiet this down. They may have added a spring. Yes, it's just something to be aware of as these springs weaken, but as you can see; it's not a difficult fix if the wear isn't too bad on the parts shown in that video. These parts are not soaked in an oil bath but they do get an oil splash so wear should be minimal over the years.

And yes; a certain amount of that chucka chucka sound the torque compensator makes is considered normal. If it gets too loud then we know to add a spring or replace one. Of course the problem as time goes on is these parts will not be available to us from Polaris so buying one now might be prudent.
