Default General Victory long term reliability

Hey folks-

I'm new to Victory and American bikes. I've always owned Hondas for ease of maintenance, extreme reliability and fun ride in general. Now I want to get a more serious bike and my research has brought me to Victory. I'm inches away from buying a 2005 custom Hammer. My concern is that the owner has 26000 miles on it. That's over 3000 miles a year. I need to go into the purchase as prepared as possible. Can anyone tell me what to look for or ask the owner? What are the potential pitfalls with buying a bike with such high mileage? Is a Victory as reliable as a Honda? (that should get people going! ) Any responses are greatly appreciated, especially from owners that have racked up a lot of miles on their Victory.

I only have 9k on my Jackpot now but there are plenty of members who have much more than 26k on theirs. The transmissions are bullet proof. As far as I am aware there are quite a few that have put over 100K on their bikes with no issues other than general wear and tear items/maintenance being done.

26,000 miles is not high mileage. If the bike is well maintained, not a problem.

In the 70-some-K miles I have been riding mine, the only problem I ever had was a voltage regulator/rectifier.

There are 200,000 mile Victory motorcycles out there. These bikes are over-engineered... not in the way that a Honda is, making working on it a pain... but in the way that the parts are designed to be understressed.

The 2005 Hammer was the first year of that model. There are no catalytic converters on those (which is good). It was the first 100"/6-speed Victory model. You'll love it.

half_crazy has it right.

My Uncle is the one who convinced me to get a Victory.

He has had a 2000 V92C since it was new. It currently has 106,000 miles last I heard. The engine has never been opened up, just a few tune ups and a belt or 2 and lots of tires. Many of those miles were 2-up with a lot of luggage traveling cross country. If that isn't reliability what is?

These engines were over-engineered. They are strong enough to handle 2X the power reliably.

I bought my 2007 Kingpin with 20,000 miles on it and even though the previous owner felt it was "getting up there" I knew it was just getting broken in!

There are maybe a thousand guys here if not more that put on 15 thousand miles a year and all they do is oil changes and tires when need.
Even 7 thousand miles a year isn't much. Victory has a very strong running motor and body.

Thanks to all. This is of course great news. Is it really this simple? I want to believe it. Anyone have anything to expand upon other than the engine? Routine maintenance aside, are their any others nags? IMO, even mundane issues that reoccur too often are troublesome on the road. Electronics, starter, suspension, etc are all points of interest and concern to me. Sorry if I'm starting a topic in the "new" section, but I didn't have a lot of luck finding a thread that focused on reliability. I guess I could comb a million help posts, but there's a lot of junk out there. Probably do it anyway....

I have an 03 vegas with 31k miles on it and I can't believe my bike is 10 years old. The way it looks and rides feels like a brand new bike. Heck I just change the original battery last week.
And I ride mine like I stole it every time I get on it. I say buy that hammer, you won't be sorry. Only thing you have to keep in mind is that big fat rear tire is going to make the handling bit of a bitch in the beginning but I'm sure you'll get use to it after a little while.
