Default Indian Test Ride Report

Ok, so here in Oklahoma City; we now have an Indian Motorcycle dealership. I just had to check them out when I had a day off. The folks there were very friendly! I test rode one of the Chieftains (The Roadmaster and Scout were not in stock yet). My comparison is to a 2012 Victory Cross Country Tour.

1.) Ride Comfort: The Victory wins hands down. The Chieftain had floor boards mounted too high and the handle bars needed approximately 1.5-2.5 inches more of pull back. (My Victory has the factory pull back bars). It looked like the floor boards had a lower adjustment, but I'm not sure if it would have been low enough. I've only dragged the floor boards on the Victory a few times (while being stupid - and having fun-) on some tight highway exits and entrances. I was worried that lowering the Indian floor boards would cause me to drag them more often.

2.) Ride Handling: Low speeds the Indian wins! At speeds lower than 10mph, the Indian was easier to handle than the Victory. At higher speeds, I didn't really notice that big of a difference in tight turns, curvy roads, or on every day maneuvers. High speed was a tie with the tie breaker going to the Victory's ride comfort.

3.) Gadgets: Indian wins. If only the Cross Country Tour had some of these gadgets. I'm not really interested in the remote locks on the saddle bags. Might be convenient, might not matter. I liked the bluetooth integration. The XCT has a hook up for an ipod, but nothing to stream music from my phone (Android phone). I liked all the doodads and electronics on the Indian better.

4.) Sound and looks: Indian wins. I love the looks of the XCT, but the Indian was just slightly better looking. Your taste may vary. The XCT in stock configuration is actually too quiet. (My Vegas 8-Ball with Victory Stage One pipes is too loud.) The Indian was in between the two and sounded just like what I think the perfect motorcycle should sound like. There is one person here in Oklahoma City that modified the exhaust on his XCT to the perfect sound, but I don't know exactly what he did. Once I find him again, I'll be doing that to my XCT!

Basically, I was thinking of trading the XCT and the Vegas for a Roadmaster until I this test drive. I just bought a 5th wheel toy hauler and next summer will be living in it full time. Having just one motorcycle sounded better than having two to load and unload all the time. Indian was the only motorcycle I was considering other than Victory. I don't really like most of the HDs out there (personal preference, nothing against HD). After this test ride, I'm sticking with Victory. If I get rid of one bike, it will be the Vegas 8-Ball.

I need two modifications to my XCT though. I need the heat shields that someone on the forum was making. Last July I rode from Oklahoma City to Sante Fe NM. The outside temp was in the upper 90's for most of the ride there. I burned a quarter sized spot on the back of my thigh from the engine heat. I was riding between 80 & 90 mph most of the way. (BTW, the cruise control works great at 90mph!) The ride home was in the rain. I really really liked the amount of protection the XCT provides. The ride was pleasant and uneventful even if a bit wet. I also need to modify the exhaust as mentioned above.

Just my $0.01 worth of opinion.

Still waiting for a chance to ride a Scout. The Vegas may go bye bye for a Scout or Gunner if I decide to keep two bikes.

Yeah, they are close, and each have pluses and minuses. They were a tie in my book, which is how I ended up with a 2015 Chieftain next to my 2011 XR.

The Scout Makes a Sweet Ride to have as a 2nd Ride but don't doubt the Gunner would be as well .. Just plan on waiting a bit to get the Scout though .. Although in some cases this isn't a bad thing gives more time to plan and save for it ..

(I just wish Polaris would have spent the $ on Victory) and let the used to be go where it belongs.! Update and improve don't reincarnate the dead.

Default Mod both choices

Must say if I did get the Scout I would be modifing it. I would not leave it alone. Same with the Gunner, I would be modifing it also. I would probably go for the Gunner if road both bikes back to back just before signing on the dotted line. The Scout would be getting cafed out if I got one, much more sporty.

Buckeye, Arizona(USA) 2011 Victory Cross Roads, Black police bag guards, black engine guards, black handle bars, Triumph Tiger mirrors, Triumph hand grips, set speedo/tach back 5" , adjustable timing wheel, Lloyzz Fuel Programmer III & air filter. Modified exhaust, made stock into 2 into 1. MRA windshield, Rotated front fender forward,relocated ignition switch, Bad Ace Fuel Tank Risers, Fat front tire.
