Default K&N Air filter won't slide back in

I have a 2007 Kingpin. Got the stage 1 exhaust when I bought it new which came with a K&N airbox and filter. I remove the filter every wash since taping over the box doesn't keep water from getting inside. The filter has always slid in and out with ease until the last time I removed it. About a month ago, after I was done washing and making sure the box was dry, I had a terrible time getting the filter to slide back in. I had to work it like crazy to finally get it in without damaging the filter.

I have almost 6k miles on the bike and decided to clean and oil the filter today with K&N's recharge kit. Again, ridiculous struggle to get the filter back in. It's like it got taller. The plastic grooves in the box are unobstructed and the rubber border around the filter doesn't feel tacky. I don't get it. Anyone have this happen? Did you figure out a way to smoosh the filter back down to get it to slide easier? Would it be safe to rub a little Vaseline around the rubber to help it slide easier?

Thanks in advance.

Cut that POS airbox out of there with a utility knife and put an S&S airbox in its place.

See how easy that was?

I usually spray a little of the K&N oil on the rubber part and that lets it slide in.

I always keep a can of spray silicone lube in my garage. It puts on a real fine film and works great on the filter.

Spray silicone worked for me as well getting past that one stubborn spot BUT I have to agree with Half_Crazy and say spend the extra money and put you a S&S or Bigmouth K&N in ridding yourself of the troublesome, restrictive air box. You WONT regret it!

Ok, you convinced me. I made my appointment with Lloydz for an S&S at the AVR in Spirit Lake. It's only money, right?
