Default Is this the ratchet assembly?

So I've run into this about 4-5 times over the course of about 25-30 rides. When I try to shift the bike from first into second, no matter how hard I might try to upshift with my foot, the bike just doesn't let me. If I pull over to the side of the road, turn off the bike, and turn it on again, seems like the problem goes away. Is this the ratchet assembly I see mentioned so often? The clutch cable was replaced by previous owner about 2500 miles ago with a barnett cable.

Do I simply need to let the beauty warm up a little more before I kick her into gear? I figured since it's EFI after about 60 seconds, should be ready to ride without issue. If it is the ratchet issue, guess I'm living with it for now since it seems an easy thing to avoid having to deal with for now thanks to the restart. Thanks for the info.

Engines warm enough to ride when it's uncomfortable to rest your left hand on the cylinder barrels, it's nothing to do with rich or leanness of the EFI idle circuit, its the expansion rate of the different metals in the barrel and the pistons.
Ride it before they equalise and you're flogging your engine.
What's the hurry? Let her warm up.


As for the ratchet it could be worn, if you're handy with wrenches then pull the primary off and have a look and while you're in there fit an oil drain plug copper washer to the shifter ratchet shaft right next to the c clip, that'll take most of the side to side play of the shifter ratchet out.
Keep riding it that way and you may damage the dogs or the gears and end up with big costly problems.

Thanks, figured it might be the issue but being that re starting the bike makes it stop, maybe thought it had something to do with the engine not being warm enough, I'll give it an extra minute before I go. I've got an oil change due in about 500 miles, suppose I can pull the primary off then. Just to be sure, should the wash go on the outside (before part #14) or on the inside (after part #14)? Thanks.

On the inside of the primary. Slide it onto the shaft till it meets up with the c clip 14
Let us know how your shift improves.
Check the ratchet for wear too of course.

when you start bike sit on it and put your left hand on the cylinder. You'll feel the heat build up. When it gets warm to the touch it takes about 2 to 3 minutes. Now you're ready to ride.

Now to the shifting. Adjust the clutch cable when bike is overnight cold. never warm or hot. Once you have a good clutch adjustment then see how it shifts.

before you pull primary see if dealer has gasket he might not have one.
Get some threaded rod from hardware store and make 4 long studs and screw into 4 different holes when putting primary back on. It will hold gasket in place and help to align primary
