Default 04 Kingpin questions

I have an opportunity to purchase an 04 Kingpin for what seems like a reasonable price.

Are there things to watch out for? What problems seem to be recurring?

Trying to gather some knowledge before I go look at this bike, so share words of wisdom.

Thanks,

That is one of the most reliable and toughest Victory platforms made. If it's is in good shape and you can get a good deal, there is nothing serious to consider. Although on my Kingpin, I have broken a few clutch cables. I have had no real problems with it.

BTW, I don't know what a "good deal" to you is, but around here. That bike would sell for between $4500 to $6500

Other than the clutch cable issue there were 2 recalls on the 04 you may wan to watch for. The shifter was a single pin setup on the floorboard, they would snap and the rear break lines would get damaged and leak at the calipers. If both of them were addressed, it is a great bike. I have one and love it!

I have an 04 kingpin and as far as I am concerned, it is a great bike. I went to a Victory Demo Ride a while back and rode several Vics. Except for the Vision, there was nothing there as comfortable as my bike...not even the XC. Even the 12 Kingpin wasn't as comfortable as the 04. I may one day have another bike but unless something drastically changes, I will always have the KP!

I went to look at the Kingpin.
I knew it wasn't perfect cosmetically, but it was more neglected than I had hoped. No biggie, probably would repaint it anyway.

My main concern is the exhaust smelled strong of fuel. When I would rev slightly and hold if for 5 seconds and then let off, it would puff a little light colored smoke. It wasn't black like too much fuel, wasn't quiet "oil blue", but those are the only choices. Right?

The bike has an S&S air box the owner had put on when he bought the bike. I don't believe he did any of his own maintenance so I'm not sure if the throttle bodies have ever been cleaned. He said he had it serviced by Vic shops, the last time was at a new shop, so he didn't think the shop was Vic trained yet. This bike has less than 7 thousand miles, was on dealer floors until 2007 when the seller bought it. The seller purchased another Vic in 2010, so this one's for sale since he doesn't ride it any more.

I have no experience with the earlier Vic motors, so I'm asking for help. I like the look of the bike, just don't to buy someone else's problem.

7,000 miles isn't even broken in. Unless it has knocking or any other serious signs of big trouble, I wouldn't be too concerned. Vics do run rich at stat up. Not sure about the smoke you are talking about. But, I doubt it could be rings or valvle seals. My Kingpin has 55,000 miles and runs great. Could it have had any condensation in the exhaust?

I can only speak for my 2011 Kingpin(for sale, BTW) It has 3800 miles and it smokes at idle on start up. It has a "rich cycle" for the first 8 minutes. Not sure about the 04 but it sounds very reasonable it does, too. Before I bought mine, I talked to the service manager at one of the largest dealers on the east coast, and he told me that since 1999 he has seen a total of 4 engine jobs--- that is how durable these things are.
