Default rear tire cupped at 6,500 miles

My dealer said time for a new tire, plenty of tread left and its only slight cupping. He gave me a quote for avon Venoms f/r i think they were radials not sure.

But research here and there tells me to go with the 407/408 HD dunlops.

I say mention that JP cycles carries but cant find there nor any of the other online places.

Can someone provide me with places to get them from.
Should I really worry about changing the rear at 6500 miles?

Depends. Take a picture and post it.

Tires lose elasticity and grip over time and heat cycles. Old tires get cracks that give their age away. Newer tires that get used hard may lose grip before the tread is gone.

Many types of tires on many types of bikes wear into deformed patterns. Its been said that proper inflation helps, but I'm pretty good about keeping tires in air and I've still had a bunch that "cupped." I've never replaced any of them before they reached their wear bars and none of them gave me any more trouble than any other worn tire i.e. their handling degrades. That's why new tires ALWAYS make a bike feel like a new machine.

Riding is no fun if it's going to make you anxious that something awful is going to happen. If it makes you feel more secure to replace things that are beginning to show their age, then do it. You don't need our approval.

I got ya, its just that the dealer said 6k is about the limit. Do the stock rubber rear go that soon. Still cant get a handle on the HD 407 tire. I only find a bunch of radial for the rear.

I've ridden sport bikes for most of my life. On a track, some won't last a thousand miles. In the hot south, they might only last 3k miles. To me 6k miles sounds pretty good, though I'll admit I'm goofy over the fact my first set of tires on the XR lasted 11k miles!

Why do you want a tire designed for a Harley on it. Did someone convince you that stamping a bar and shield into a standard Dunlop makes it worth twice the price? I've easily banged up the floorboards on a Kingpin with stock tires without them even breaking a sweat. IOW, they are more than capable of doing anything a KP is capable of doing.

Anyway, I typically get my buns at Competition Accessories or Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse (MAW) and can testify that both are excellent distributors with tons of products and great prices.

The 407 is a multi compound tire, and most claim superior mileage and handling on a pin with them. They might be on par in price to pin oem tires.

Besides the way these oem tires act on groovy cement highways and over tar snakes and joints, does make pucker at times.

Michelin commanders were awesome on my royal star even worn and cupped compared to Dunlop 404. Can only a front in the commander 2 no rear listed, shit the rear isn't even listed on Dunlop's site

I don't know how you drive but I'm at 12000 on my XC and have a good bit left to the wear bars. And I'm in the hot south with rough roads. I don't have any cupping either.

Try to think of one compelling reason from the dealers POV to tell you not to get a new tire.

Just saying.

I thought that too, just didn't say it. I was trying to give benefit of the doubt in case the dealer primarily deals with sport bike guys. I understand they really eat up the rubber.

I change a lot of tires.

95% of the time, a cupped tire is a sign of under-inflation. I know - the owner's manual says one thing and maybe the tire manufacturer says the same - or not. One thing is for sure - you're going to have to go higher than what the manual says, if you don't want tire cupping.

A contributing factor is that nobody will spend $8 for a decent tire gauge. WalMart $1 tire gauges and usually not all that accurate.

A Harley tire on a Victory? Say it isn't so !

Actually, some of those "Harley" tires are pretty decent. The D401's have a 5-ply tread and three ply sidewall. STIFF SOBs.

In my mind, Avons are a bit soft, and over priced.

Want a premium tire? Try a Metzler 880 or Dunlop Elite 3.
