Default MBW rear fender LED signals and license plate dilemma

I'd like to install some MBW LED turn signals on my 2007 Vegas. http://mbwmotorcycle.com.au/Vegas.html The two wrap arounds for the front forks should be no problem but I have a dilemma with the strip for the rear fender. I want to keep my saddle bags on so moving the license plate to a side mount may not be feasible. Ideally I'd like to have the plate below the rear fender like it is now. But MBW no longer offers a unit that combines a plate mount underneath the LED strip for the rear fender. They released a notice advising against this and recalling all of the units that they sold: http://www.mbwmotorcycle.com/rear%20...l%20notice.pdf Does anyone have any advice on how I can install these signals, my saddle bags and license plate all at the same time? If I used a horizontal side mount and positioned the license plate partially beneath/behind the saddle bag might that work?

Honestly, if u keep the bags... i would keep the turn signals like they are since it realy makes no lookwise diferents in my opinion !??

The front ones i agree !

kind of a side note and not intended to hijack your thread, when you get the front lights can you send me a bunch of pics of them all the way around?? i'd really like to see what they are all about before I purchase a set.

Everyone hates the look of saddlebags I know... but they're just so handy I can't part with them.

It will probably be 3 months before I make any mods to the bike. I've got snow up to my knees today so the riding season is a long ways away. Also, the bike isn't stored at my place so I can't even work on it right now. I'm just trying to figure things out while I've got the free time to do so.

I did not post to offend you in anyway .. if u like them .. GO AHEAD ! but when u leave them on , then it would be a waste of $ to use a LED turn light since the stock ones are not sticking out or look bad with saddle bags !

I understood what you meant and I didn't take offence. This is what personalizing is all about. Manufacturers try to make bikes that appeal to as large of a market as possible. Then when we buy them we make changes that suit our own personal tastes. What appeals to me may not appeal to you.

I found a picture where someone did what I've been thinking. Side mounted horizontal license plate underneath the saddle bag and mbw led turn signal on the rear fender. So it looks like I've answered my own question.

Alignment

According to Federal Highway Administration (FHA) vehicle safety standards, turn signals for motorcycles must be placed so that the "direction is coincident with the axis of reference." In more simple terms, it means they must be aligned horizontally to the road.

Reflective Lens

A reflective lens must be located behind the turn signal to enhance its luminescence and make the motorcycle more conspicuous.

Turn Signal Size

Each turn signal (left and right) on a motorcycle must be at least 3.5 square inches (2,258 square mm). If a multiple compartment lamp or multiple lamps are used, each turn signal must be at least 3.41 square inches (22 square cm).

Signal Before Turning

Motorcyclists, like all motorists, must single their intention to turn with adequate time for others on the road to see the signal. It is illegal to change lanes on a highway or make a turn without first signaling your intention to do so. Unlike other vehicles, motorcycle turn signals are turned on and off manually.

Turn Signal Requirements

FHA standards are applicable on all interstate highways, and most states have adopted the FHA guidelines for state and other roadways. This is not true in all states, however. Texas, for example, doesn't require motorcycles to have turn signals. It is advisable, nonetheless, to have turn signals on all motorcycles for safety and legal considerations.

Brightness and Blinking

Turn signals must meet the same candlepower requirements for Class A turn signals on cars. The easiest way to ensure a turn signal light conforms to law is to look at the lens. It should have SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) or DOT (Department of Transportation), or both, stamped onto the glass lens, which signifies that it conforms with FHA and SAE guidelines. The turn signal must also flash to meet the law's requirements. Headlight manufacturers use flashing relays that rely on capacitors to regulate the flow of electricity to the turn signal

You could have saved yourself a little bit of time on that. I live in Canada so our requirements are different. But the basic point is still the same, these signals won't meet our Transport Canada requirements. Here are few things I just learnt here: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/roadsafety/s...tm#_toc%20s7.9

The signals need to be separated by at least 4", the front have to be 16" on centre apart and the rear 9" on centre apart. Three red rear reflex reflectors are also required, a license plate light is also required.

the way i would read this is that the 4 inches on the back are met !
since the fender is wider then 4 inches so the outside of the signal is 4 inches apart !
The plate can be easaly mounted with an LED light bolt !

I ended up making my own... custom cut a piece of acrylic and molded a LED strip around it, epoxy'd it and a lot of hacking of black plastic with a dremel. Very happy with the results.
