Baffles or Catalytic Converters

I pulled the mufflers off the header pipes on my 2011 Hammer today and was surprised to see a honeycomb like device inside the header pipe. It kind of looks like the inside of a catalytic converter. Is that what it is? or is some kind of a baffle? Not sure why they would need a baffle with a 15lb muffler on the end of it. I bought the bike in NJ but the factory pulled from a dealer in MI

Those honey comb objects in your header pipes ARE your cats.

If the cats "fall apart" or rattle out the pipe when the mufflers are off for some reason they need to reprogram the ECM or ECU, or remap your fuel program. Just like changing pipes and or air filter. With the cat out of the exhaust the exhaust flows much easier,no restriction except for the mufflers if you run mufflers. I you do not have it remapped, the bike will be running waaaaaaaaaaaay to lean.

Do all Vics have these in them or only bikes sold in states that require them? They really look restictive I'm glad I ordered Pipes.

http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/313/1572/Motorcycle-Article/Motorcycle-Emissions-Regs-Examined.aspx Most states are getting emission testing so if your bike does not pass no plate. The cats are there for a reason. The bike is tuned for the cats to burn the leanest without polluting. So buying a used bike which required cats and were removed, might be against the law in some states now. It will be hard to sell a used bike with cats removed. Just replace the cats myself on my truck and it was over $350. The fines will start next for states to generate money for people that break the Feds law.. So it is up to you. I think they run just fine with them. Just not as loud. And loud is another subject that most towns are clamping down on...

Here in NJ we are going backwards. It used to be tough to get a vehicle(bike or car) through an inspection if everything wasn't perfect. Now we have no inspections for motorcycles at all and cars will pass as long as there is no check engine light. I know several people riding around with bald tires and bad brakes because they are to cheap and its no longer need them to get an inspection sticker

When I got my Hammer, I bought the Vic 2 into 1 system. I then took the header pipes, drilled a hole in the center of the cats and one off to the side. I then took a coat hanger, straightened it out, bent one end over about 8 inches, pushed it down through the center hole, pulled the short 8" section up through the smaller hole, got a pair of vise grips, locked onto both sections, had a friend hold the pipe and used a hammer to smack the vise grips to extract the cats in each pipe. I had ordered the 49 state legal set that didn't have them, but was shipped the ones that did - no big deal. I had a VFC3 and the LLoydz Torque Tubes installed so setting up the correct air/fuel ratio was taken care of at that time.

You just threw away big money. The cat material is very expensive and if you would have recycled it. You might have made a hundred bucks.
