my dealer has the new b/rests in stock for the warranty recall. they have changed over 3 already. you get everything incl the pad.
you do not get a new carrier.--:)

What do you mean by not getting a new "carrier". I am waiting on my dealer to call me back about replacing my backrest because I do plan on putting a luggage rack on it in the future.

That's what I'm most concerned with. If I EVER decide I want a rack, am I SOL with the old style backrest? I think they should replace them all to avoid confusion/future issues (or lawsuits if the worst happens).
I haven't talked to my local dealer about it yet since they have not had the Vic franchise that long. I may have to call around to get a straight answer.

if you didnt have one in the first place then you wont be bolting it
on the new one.or just keep the old one and dont worry about it.

does the new one have holes for the luggage rack? I was originally told it was only effected if it was with a specific luggage rack, but the letter I got yesterday says any. I have a luggage rack I made myself and am leaving for a week long trip in a week. not sure what I should do.

you should be fine , i still have yet to see one of the trouble backrests. i do believe it is a direct replacement backrest thats beefed up some and the luggage rack bolts on. it pretty much has to because its a recall on the backrest itself and not rack so the rack should transfer over.

The other Vic site has a guy who posted the new backrest and it is slightly different. It has 3 mounting holes in it for a backrest and not two like the original. I don't think the original luggage rack will bolt up to the new backrest or vice versa. I am still going to push for a new backrest if possible.

Your dealer should coordinate with mine. Mine has racks, but no backrests. The way Ma Vic has handled this, from the beginning, is not very confidence inspiring. The lack of communication, the lack of replacements, even keeping dealers in the dark is reprehensible.

I got a second recall letter in the mail a couple of days ago basically repeating what the first letter said. I states that if you have a luggage rack or have even had a luggage rack at one time then you are eligible for the recall but it says if have never had a luggage rack then don't worry about it. To me this says that all backrests are eligible becuase how the hell are they supposed to know who put on a friends luggage rack for a week long trip and gave it back to him when he got home or who bought one and ran it for a year and then sold it. I think they are wording it the best way they can so not as many people come running in to get a new backrest. I also think they are opening themselves up to a lawsuit if they don't replace all backrests no matter if they had a luggage rack or not.

anyone got pics of the new b/rest and mt hoes?

#12 ·
I didn't take pics of the rack when I was handling it, but if it helps, the bars that mate with the backrest are wider and the three holes form a triangle, making it impossible for it to work with the original backrest. One can not even attempt to drill holes to make it work.
It goes beyond my comprehension why new racks were not shipped with backrests or vice-versa. I have received three letters so far and am wondering how many more I will get before this mess is resolved and I have a new rack and backrest.

there was a guy on the fb page that had a backrest with luggage rack for sale , he supposedly got the ne recall backrest and put his original luggage rack back on and up for sale and sold it.

talked to rich frey at douglas an frey and was told if you have
a victory luggage rack you will get an updated rack too.
of course they are on backorder. you will have to turn in
ALL your victory parts to get the new ones. you will get all
new bolts, bushings, etc. thats all i was told. need vin #
and mileage.

Had my backreat inspected by the dealer and he didn't find anything wrong. I have since installed a luggage rack, carried bags on it for a number of trips and had no issues. I check the unit EVERYTIME I ride to make sure it is tight and locked. No problems here !!

#17 ·
Hey Rich, now don't go putting lead ingots on that rack! Ma Vic's attorneys are afraid that's what we might be doing and that's what this recall is all about.:)

#18 ·
as far as im concerned, i can keep what i have. the luggage
rack was a high dollar ornament for me cause the only thing
it has carried so far is dust and lint. takes an awful lot to
get to 4 #.

I bought my XC used and the original owner bought the backrest and rack separately. Now, I've asked the dealer twice about this, they look up the VIN for the bike, and then tell me that nothing is flagged for my VIN so everything is fine.

Does anyone else think this sounds like BS??

#20 ·
Like I said, the way Ma Vic is running this show is not very confidence inspiring. Upon very close examination, I don't think anyone runs the risk of failure as long as the rack is not loaded with excessive weight. I would trust the original design.

the whole thing is a joke! my guy said if you dont have a luggage rack its not covered, what if in a couple years i or someone else puts a rack on and it fails? most likely wont be covered anymore. every backrest out there now should get replaced whether it has a rack or not, and if the original rack wont fit it should also be replaced!

The original letter says, If you have a rack, or have ever installed one previously, you are affected.
I had borrowed a rack for a weekend trip, so I will say I am covered no matter what the dealer says.
That's the angle I would take dtmmil

I do agree this whole thing has been handled VERY badly.

yep, i made a rack for mine , told him i have one on it, just hope it fits my new backrest.

Ok guys. I have a 2013 Vic cross country . What recall?
Jim

#26 ·
If you have the Lock & Ride backrest WITH the rack and you purchased it with the bike then you would have received a recall letter. Otherwise, you are not included.
Ma Vic thinks that combo might fail but doesn't say how or why.

#25 ·
I have not put a luggage rack on mine YET.
I am going to call my local dealer and demand the new and improved backrest.
It doesn't cost him a penny, and MY WIFE rides on the back, not his wife.

#27 ·
my dealer ordered me a new one, told them I used to have a luggage rack, but not anymore.

#28 ·
If you have an after market Rack, it will not just bolt onto the new backrest. There are now three holes instead of two at the sides. I saw one last week at the dealer. They ordered the new unit for me while I was there. I didn't compare them side by side, so I'm not sure if you can drill a new hole, or holes, to mate the old aftermarket rack to it.

Well this sound dumb, at best. I have the old style backrest and a Victory rack. If there are not three mounting holes on each side, I expect another rack also. I guess I'll just need to call the dealership.

Update: I called my local dealership and was told if I turn in my backrest and Victory luggage rack, I will receive a new updated backrest and luggage rack. The catch is I must leave it with them to start the process and the racks are on back order until the 6th. I think I'll just wait.

Ride safe.

The touble is, the story changes depending on who you talk to. I called Ma Vic myself and the rep I spoke with said that it only applied to Victory luggage racks, not after market ones. Called my dealer and got the same story. Other versions abound.

I don't have a luggage rack, but intend to buy one soon. Because I don't have one now, my back rest is not able to be replaced. If I want the new back rest, I need to buy a Victory Luggage Rack and them my dealer will "make it work somehow".
