I noticed a metal rattling on low RPM from the rear of my bike and found the inside belt guide portion of my rear sprocket rattles when lightly tapped. I compared it to a buddies 14 XC and his is tightly secured and no movement found.
Has anyone seen this before and can it be tightened? The only connection I can make is it may have started after rear tire replacement.

Dealer answer

I called the dealer and was informed I was out of warranty by two weeks. They have seen my issue before and told me the rivets on the wheel side of the sprocket loosen and back out a bit causing a rattle. They suggested tapping the rivets back in flush and applying a heavy duty silicone along the seam of the plate and sprocket.

are you referring to the part I have arrow on. If so feel up there am guessing there are two small bolts that hold it in place. Maybe 4mm or 6mm. If there bolts tighten them or take it off altogether

No its actually the circular backing plate of the sprocket item that is riveted on. Dealer just told me they have seen the rivets back out and separate the plate from the sprocket a tad causing them to rattle together. They suggested tapping the rivets back in and applying a heavy duty silicone to the seam to seal them together.

Whouuuuuuw OK I was reading this whole thread sins yesterday, and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what was rattling

Now we know coz of your good video that it is the rear wheel belt sprocket \ pulley,

Nope never heard anyone had this problem....

Yes I would take it off and tap the rivets with dremels again until they are solid again, I WOULD NOT mess with any glue.....

Take the easy road first... Then you can always take more difficult solutions

Well David, rattles bug the **** out of me too, so I understand your frustration.

How to fix this? I'm thinking the best way to start is to simply pull the rear wheel and put it up on your work bench where you can really see what's going on. It's not that big of deal and you will get to know your bike better in the process.

If you decide to do this then please take some pictures of the process to share with other Vic riders.

What I think will be the ultimate fix is to remove that odd backing plate that's probably there because some A-Hole sued Polaris at some point because my 2011 doesn't have it.

Now here is the important point; you will need to replace those bolts that hold the pulley on if you want to do this job right. The reason is those bolts stretch once torqued to spec.

Yes, lots of people don't replace them and lots of people get lucky, but some don't and what happens is those bolts break then the rear wheel locks up or if you're really lucky; just a lot of noise happens and you find yourself on the side of the road calling a tow truck.

Those dang bolts are far more expensive than they should be but they are heat treated to withstand the torque and side load of that pulley which is under a lot of stress.

It's your call but when you only have the two wheels under you; spending an extra $20 or so doesn't sound like so much when you find yourself stranded because you decided not to replace them and spend the money.

I speak from personal experience and from listening to others who have been down the same road. Spend the extra money and buy the damn new bolts.

I would guess your belt is running too hard to the inside of the pulley to cause this to happen. You may want to track that belt also.

Hmmmm older models have no "left" backing plate on that pulley?

That is interesting, never knew that @BBob...

Yup i bought the bolts long time ago for stock, as our tire changing shops we have to remove the pulley, it just doesn't fit the hight on that rim-bench.... So I clean the bolts and glue them back in,

The HUB & pulley are from aluminum and the bolts are steel, so the bolts will never be stretched under these low torque settings, coz if you google the torque settings of the pulley Bolt, then you find that this is for aluminum, not for steel....

BUT i agree with full on safety regarding this matter, and you must think before you do...
