Bike starts OK, but then runs rough, popping & backfiring. Used to run great, then suddenly started acting up. Any troubleshooting suggestions? I have checked everything and have been unable to resolve problem.

I just went through this same thing after my bike had to sit outside in a thunderstorm. So may first question is did this start after the bike set out the rain or after washing it? If so you will want to start by cleaning all the sensor connections and applying dielectric grease to all connections. All so don't forget to check the battery to make sure the connections are clean and tight. Follow the ground wire to the ground make sure the ground is tight and clean. I have heard a bad speed sensor can cause these symptoms so if cleaning all connections doesn't work try disconnecting the speed sensor and see if that takes care of it. Also make sure the battery has a complete charge. If none of this works I am stumped.

If none of the above suggestions work, try this - cheap & quick, might fix it.

Turn ignition on, roll throttle to wide open over a 5-count, hold it for another 5-count, let it snap closed,. then turn off the ignition.

The computer sometimes can forget what the values it sees for closed & wide open throttle are - this reminds it.

If this doesn't do it, I'd start looking at either the throttle position sensor or the rubber throttle body adapter - it can crack / split with age, totally screwing up your fuel / air mix.

Chris,

I had a simular problem. I initially had a low RPM intermitant miss in the #1 cylinder. It began to get really noticable after storage. Inspected the throttle bodies and discovered that some air plugs and tubing were dry rought causing a "too much air" problem. The computor read this as if the throttle was being opened and in turn dumped more fuel. This cause my low end miss and fowling of plugs. It also caused a unreliable take off from a stop. Repaired / replaced the dry tubing / plugs and she pured just fine. Also check the lines to the charcol canister if installed. Hope this helps.

I had a similar issue right after installing my clutch cable, I had lifted the tank some to get access. After it would start but ran rough and would pop and sputter, I found the plastic quick connect t fitting right at the back of the tank under the front of the seat and came just loose enough to let in air, pushed down on it and it clicked back in. Ran fine after
